52apolooza: Legion of Super-Heroes

Postby LOLtron » Wed Sep 28, 2011 11:19 am

Legion of Superheroes goes back to the future for a sixth time in the latest #1 of the oft-rebooted series.  How does this #1 do?

Welcome to 52apolooza, the Outhouse feature focusing on DC's September Relaunch.  All of DC's 52 titles will be reviewed by our pool of reviewers to point out the best and worst that DC's new comic book line has to offer.  To see how this book ranks among the other new DC titles, be sure to check out our 52apolooza Rankings!

Legion of Superheroes goes back to the future for a sixth time in the latest #1 of the oft-rebooted series.  How does this #1 do?  Read on and find out!

Marvel Reviewer: Comic Doctor

I've always liked the concept of Legion of Super-Heroes, but truthfully I've only read a handful of their comics in my time. I know who some of the core characters are, but not much more than that. Going into this issue, my mind was like a sponge, ready to absorb whatever was thrown at me.

losh1I loved the little pop-ups that named the character, where they were from, and what their powers were. This made it a bit easier to know who's who as soon as we meet them. Writer Paul Levitz also did a nice job giving each character their own 'voice' which made them seem more unique, and he also showed most of the character's use the powers. The plot of infiltrating a Panoptes stronghold to determine exactly what is going on there meant absolutely nothing to me, and it didn't generate any interest in me to want to know more.

Francis Portela did a fine job on the art chores. His layouts were easy to follow, his lines clean, facial expressions sharp, and best of all, you always knew who was who. In a book like Legion of Super-Heroes it's very important for the reader not to be confused about who they're looking at in any panel.

Unfortunately, I feel too lost as a reader to want to learn or read more, and I think that's a bad thing since DC is trying to attract new readers to each series. If a long-time comic reader like myself isn't interested in issue #2, I can't see a newbie being interested either.

Writing: 16/25
Art: 20/25
Accessibility: 14/25
Enjoyability: 16/25

TOTAL: 66/100

New Reader Reviewer: Kelly Symmonds

Writing- This issue rates in my bottom ten out of the New 52. I didn't like it at all. I gave LoS a chance when I first started comics and I wasn't a fan then either. The rent is just too damn high and all the characters make it a confusing mess. I still can't for the life of me tell you who looks like what and what powers they have. I guess taking half of the characters and sending them to the past will help with this but I'm probably bailing on this comic by issue three. 12/25.

Art- I feel bad for artist when they are paired with a poorly written comic. They get a bad rap when 'most of the time' they haven't done anything wrong themselves. The art didn't stand out or amaze me.12/25.

Accessibility- I see this as the worst book any new reader could pick up. Yes, it is all but totally isolated from the rest of the DCu but damn is it confusing in its own right. With a cast of 12 or so characters this is far from the easiest place to come aboard the DCu train. 5/25.

Enjoyability- Week three yielded some of my favorite and least favorite relaunch issues. LoS falls into the latter and ranks near, if not at, rock bottom. Hey, what are those fishmen looking creatures? 6/25.

Overall: 35/100

What's so hard to follow ? A Legion team is sent undercover to investigate why a watch-post has gone "dark". Enough was explained about the post's function and why it's important. The rest is part of the mystery we can follow along into next issue.

Do we really need another #1 origin issue explaining how and why the Legion came together, and x-amount of issues inducting all 20+ members before we get into anything cool ?
Fuck.
No.

Which may or may not include how the books connects to the new Superman continuity and vice versa.

Am I the only reviewer of this?

I know the basic plot of infiltrating the watch-post, but I don't know some of the new characters, and I don't care to know. Also, I don't care to know why the watch-post went off the grid, what they were watching, etc..

Just my personal opinions.

I could always give my two cents about it. The story was okay, but the fact that DC didn't seriously try to reboot this title despite several issues needing to be resolved like the "lost" continuity between LSH V.2 #63 and the Lightning Saga, $#!tty Gary Frank costumes, characters who are really older than they need to be, etc. And oh yeah, that little thing about the new Superman continuity too.)
