The story begins with the newly tattooed-face Electro performing a break-in at Ryker's Island. He is sent by Miss Kraven to break out the new Vulture. So then we have the New Vulture breaking out with the help of Electro. Cue Spider-Man, elsewhere, pitched in battle with Simple Simon, who is throwing pies, one of which hits Spidey right in the face. Simple Simon is merely taking part in a reality show which JJJ signed off on the permits for. We then see the Vulture by himself inspecting his new appearance and not liking it one bit. JJJ is up next in his office trying to pick up the phone off the desk, but someone has webbed it down. Spider-Man takes pics of JJJ's rage-filled tirade through the window. The Vulture is then shown tracking down who he thinks might be responsible for his transformation....some old mob contacts. Vulture is trying to get some answers from a mob boss he snags up and takes to his filthy hovel. He is shown vomiting on some rat presumably in order to digest it. Vulture asks if the mob boss knows who did this to him. The mob boss blurts out JJJ. Somehow the media gets wind of this, which doesn't help JJJ's image. Spider-Man goes to see JJJ just when the Vulture breaks through JJJ's office to get him. Battle ensues, there is some vomit and Spider-Man wishes for the old Vulture instead of this vomiting one. Vulture gets away, Spidey cannot find him. Spidey finally finds the Vulture but he is hunched over what appears to be JJJ's body, but we cannot see for sure if it is him or if he is hurt.
Fine issue, but just running Spidey through the "gauntlet" isn't enough. There needs to be more of an overarching story behind it, or else it's gonna get old quick.

Yeah, this hasn't felt like much of a gauntlet really. I think the Gauntlet name is more of a gimmick. I have never got the feeling, reading the past several issues, that Spidey is being taxed to his limits or anything. They read just like any other issue.

I think the Gauntlet is more a branding thing. Quick cuts to different villains from issue to issue. Though maybe they will all start piling on at the end.

You do know this is all leading up to 'The Grim Hunt', a 4-issue story where the Kraven's finally strike. Joe Kelly, Michael Lark, ASM #634
