How does that work?
Ok, look, I know that for some reason we here at The Outhouse, your number one stop for all things enlightened, have a reputation for not taking anything seriously and for being all around bad people for poking fun at the absurdity and overt mysogonism in the comic book industry, but what the Hell else are we supposed to do with something like this? Yes, I know that the revamped look stays true to Lady Rawhide’s original costume, but is that really a good thing? In over 20 years we haven’t moved past the point where a female hero in the Old West dresses like this?
Let’s walk through this:
Her name is Lady Rawhide and the comic is set in the latter half of the 1800’s. Put aside the fact that, by the standards of the late 1800s, she is essentially considered naked, wearing less clothing than your average prostitute (I mean really, how much credibility does a naked superhero hold, regardless of gender?). With the available technology of the day, we can safely assume that her costume is not made of latex, but rather leather (rawhide). This means that it is specifically made to be so tight that the material actually sticks to the characters under-boob and can’t even close all the way, despite the ties. I can understand the need for an open/airy wardrobe in the West - no air conditioning and the climate is rather warm - but, if that’s the case, why did the artist feel the need to make her “cold?” So cold in fact that it is obvious through leather. Leather!
As we move down the image, something that is making me more and more uncomfortable, our eyes are purposefully drawn down and to the center of Lady Rawhide's… torso, where... well, the seam of her pants, if you can call them that, correlates exactly to… um… her lady bits. Did women even shave down there in the Old West?
Wait a minute, how exactly is this costume even put together? How many pieces is it? You can see from the material that the top continues down past the under-boob, but then the corset lies atop that piece and Rawhide’s camel toe bikini bottom. Are the top and bottom connected? What actual purpose does the corset serve? It doesn’t really protect against anything, her abdomen is still a prime target for attack, and it doesn’t even have any pockets for the entire department store make-up counter she is obviously carrying around with her.
Comics have, and maybe always will be, more about male fantasy than reality, but this is beyond ridiculous. Nothing about this image says anything other than, “we know you like redheads, and you want to touch her.” This is more akin to something I wish I had the guts to buy for WIFE then a costume in a comic I’d want people to see in my house.
For G-d’s sake, through leather.
