He was right about what the Phoenix wanted:

1) hope being the host
2) fixing the mutant numbers

#1 was never in doubt.
#2 is still up in the air.

Do we know how much time has passed from Nova arriving till now? Stark has probably been working on this since then.

That's a good point. Maybe a few days at most? I'll see if someone else has figured it out as I'm too lazy :P

Also, am I the only one more interested in the next issue of New Avengers than the main title?

Between the Phoenix's dialogue in Avengers vs. X-Men and Unit's dialogue in Uncanny X-Men, I really don't see how there is much room left to debate whether or not the Phoenix is here to fix the X-Gene and restore the mutants. Now...how the Phoenix intends to go about this is a completely different story.

I did find myself cracking up when I read AvX and saw the panel with Wanda. She sure does seem broken up about the fact that the Phoenix has come to undo her nefarious plot. I know that isn't really what happened but it was fun for me to interpret it that way.

What secret origin are you referring to?

My bad, it's revealed in Uncanny #13, not AvX #5.

[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Demon overlords enslaved a population and stopped evolution in order to maintain control. Eventually, a mutant messiah emerged from the slaves and unified a team of 5 acolytes into a Proto X-men group. They fought the good fight and prayed to the Phoenix, who eventually showed up and communed with the acolytes. Then it blasted away all the demons responsible for the suppression of evolution and restarted change.

So now Phoenix is the Patron saint of mutants and if outsiders meddle with evolution she shows up and sets things right.

I don't have a problem with any of the concepts mind you, the execution just seemed a little convenient and rushed.

Because is the Phoenix there to restore mutants or make everyone a mutant or make mutants dominant? That's what's up in the air.

[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
essentially enslaving the entire human race is not something honorable

I got the impression from Uncanny #13 that
[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
The Phoenix would just restore the previous rate of mutation that should naturally occur in a population.

But who knows, maybe she'll hold a grudge and want some payback.

The threatening dialogue, most notable: "evolving tomorrow itself, beyond anything you've ever imagined". Obviously Cap saw this as a threat.

Also, with Cyke's hatred for humans, the Phoenix is not in benevolent hands

Meh, not necessarily. This could still end up being a monkey's paw/careful what you wish for type deal. There are 7 issues left, remember...
