Anyone here read the Star Trek books?

Postby GHERU » Wed Feb 19, 2014 8:05 pm

I'm looking for something new in mindless books and I've read all the star wars books that are out that seem interesting, so I was thinking of trying out the expanded Star Trek books.

Anyone know a good spot to start?
New Frontier?

Read PAD's ST books. They are excellent.

Imzadi
Q Squared - One of the best ST books I've EVER read.
Vendetta
Q-in-Law
Imzadi II

Then read Shatner's books. They are ghost written by Judith Reeves-Stevens and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. They are excellent as well.

Ashes of Eden
The Return
Avenger
Captain's Glory
Captain's Blood

I liked the Shatner books, but two things to keep in mind.

1) They're very much not canon, even the other ST book series ignore them.
2) It's very easy to tell which chapters were written by Shatner. Roughly 3 chapters of story by ghosts, and then a chapter about Kirkr reminiscing about how badass he is. Rinse, and repeat.

:P

I read Vendetta and liked it, but Imzadi didn't do much for me.

Shatner's books are decent but he goes to extremes to put Kirk head and shoulders above every other Trek character in existence

There's a Q book John De Lancie did with Peter David. Great as it got going but towards the end it seemed to fizzle out for me with a reboot.

And how he showed the entire TNG crew including Picard to be incompetents that needed to bow down before his brilliance throughout the entire story

Yeah, that was I,Q.

It did end on a whimper. Not a fan of it.

Isn't that what I said? :)

Also, Scoot left off a few of Shatner's books: he wrote a mirror universe trilogy featuring the Great Captain Universe-Savior squaring off against his mirror universe counterpart, the Emperor Tiberius. Who, having been overthrown as emperor of the Terran Empire by Goatee Spock, showed his giant balls to the Klingons and Cardassians and became THEIR emperor, and used them to conquer the Terrans.

I liked the PAD Trek novels but for some reason didn't like his Calhoun (New Frontier) series.

I'm a fan of DS9 and have to say I did enjoy the books by the actors (The 34th Rule, A Stitch in Time)...

Word.

Those were some great books as well.

If you love Kirk kicking ass, then these books are for you.

I also like the works of some of the better know "Star Trek" writers: Diane Carey, David Mack, Michael Jan Friedman, Keith R. A. DeCandido.

They read like "what if Batman was born as Kirk".
