Is Anyone Reading The Valiant Entertainmant Comics?

Postby The Old Doctor » Sun Aug 31, 2014 4:51 pm

I'm curious as I enjoyed the original early 90s version, a little bit of the late 90s one. So since I recently noted that they seem to be going on strong and expanding to cover nearly everything and into a third year with some titles... are they any good?
"Why are you pointing your screwdrivers like that? They're scientific instruments, not water pistols."
"Oh, the pointing again! They're screwdrivers! What are you going to do? Assemble a cabinet at them?"
"Are you capable of speaking without flapping your hands about?"
""Timey" what? "Timey wimey"?"

I've read, Bloodshot, Harbinger, Archer and Armstron and Quantum and Woody. All are actually good books. Quantum and Woody might be the best of the bunch...no Harbinger...definitely Harbinger.

Archer & Armstrong is one of my favorite monthly titles and I really enjoy Quantum and Woody. The first issue of Delinquents was a lot of fun too.

Of that bunch, I was a fan of Harbinger and Archer & Armstrong.

Personally, I stopped reading them after a while; not because they're bad like DC, but more because I think I was expecting them to recapture lightning in a bottle and they didn't.

Putting it another way, they're better than DC, and certain books were certainly highly readable, but they didn't have the old magic, at least to my eyes. Not enough to spend money on.

They're pretty good, solid entertainment.

I didn't read the earlier incarnation (except for recently, when I read some of their reprints).

Also, they're the only publisher that invited me up to their headquarters. I was the first person outside of the company to read Harbinger Wars #1.

It's enjoyable fare. Not mind-blowingly good, but professionally made. Their best series is probably Harbinger, while Shadowman #0 is their best single issue. I didn't expect the script on the latter to be that good.

Out of all of the old Valiants, it was Harbinger and HARD Corps that have stayed in my mind as solid titles. Almost a sort of X-Men done without physical changes and going from there. Throw in a little bit of tomorrow people then have a resistance group with a lousy acronym name. Hmm, Psi-Lords were kind of interesting too.

I never read the earlier Valiant releases, but I've read every issue of every Valiant book this current generation. Their focus on creative talent and limited number of books has been the key to how mostly great they've been.

Shadowman has been poor overall, but honestly every other book has been good-to-great IMO. Harbinger is the pick of the litter for me, but Archer & Armstrong has also been consistently funny/clever (the faraway arc is one of the best things I've read in comics). X-O Manowar took a while to grab me but right now I'm loving it - the whole Armor Hunters crossover event has been great.

Q&W was great writing with uneven art, Unity has been top shelf since the intial arc, Bloodshot was really enjoyable while it lasted... So yeah, everything is good. Just skip Shadowman.

I'd echo the others that recommend volume 1 of Harbinger as a starting point. Very intelligence series that only gets better.

Yeah, I like the current resurge of Valiant but I wish that they could have gotten back the rights to Solar, Magnus and Turok though. Apart from Archie, Dynamite, Image and Boom, they're a nice alternative to Marvel and DC. Too bad that they will never get as much popularity as them though as they could make some good movies from their books if Hollywood were to seriously invest in them.

From what I gather, Harbinger and Bloodshot have both been optioned. Not that that means anything is close to actually happening.
