I’m not really sure why we need another Avengers title, but I’m in for any Bendis Avengers stuff and it probably will help bring in new readers from the movies, so hey. This was pretty good, albeit very heavy on the set-up. Bendis is finally getting around to telling the Zodiac story he’s been talking about for a while, and it looks like being a good one, the speech from ‘Cancer’ was very interesting and set up the Zodiac as a very credible threat for the Avengers. It is a bit convenient how the only members of the team who are attacked by the Zodiac are the ones in the movie, especially since Green Hulk isn’t even on the team and hasn’t been since the 60s, but as I said, I get that this book is meant to appeal to the new reader. I would have liked a bit more actual story here, but the action sequences were very well done, Bendis and Bagley just work together so well and Bagley draws superhero action better than almost anybody. So yes, this may not be essential, but if you’re looking for some classic Avengers action with no pesky modern members like Spider-Man and Wolverine, this should be right up your alley. Plus, it’s just like the movie! Movie! Did you know there was a movie coming out? MOOOOVIEEEE!!!
