Best Batman trades.

Postby AaronW » Fri Jul 11, 2008 10:10 am

What Batman should I buy next? I've got DK1/2, Year One, Arkham Asylum, & Death in the Family. Read Hush a while back and don't recall liking it. Is Long Halloween any good?

TLH (and the sequel, Dark Victory), are two of Loeb's best all-time works. which means they still ain't that great, but they're worth reading. TLH outright steals from at least 3 or 4 other works of fiction, and has some pretty nonsensical plot twists, but the art is gorgeous and it's fun enough. plus i have a feeling next week's movie is gonna have a lot of similarities to the Two-Face stuff in TLH, so there's that.

as for other recommendations, i'd go instead with:

Strange Apparitions (the Englehart/Rogers run from the 70s)
A Lonely Place of Dying (Tim Drake's "origin")
10 Nights of the Beast (if you can find it)
Tales of the Demon (Ra's al Ghul goodness)
Ego

and i really liked Contagion, Cataclysm, No Man's Land, Legacy, Officer Down, and the Murderer/Fugitive trades.

there's a few more, but those are a good start. :-D

I'll fourth The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. They're just great (and I usually can't stand Loeb).

Sixth TLH and DV. But also nom Batman: Broken City. A great noir piece by the team from 100 Bullets.

7th for Long Halloween, but -1 for Dark Victory, which I thought was a a letdown (and Sale's Robin looked...iffy to me).

I recommend Son of the Demon, the Elseworlds Nine Lives and Thrillkiller.

and for a laugh, Batman: Harley & Ivy.

The Gotham Central trades are good.

They don't exactly star Batman but close enough because they rock.

Trinity by Matt Wagner. It also has Supes and Wonder Woman but Batman is great in it. I haven't read his Batman trades yet, but I'd bet they're good too.

I recommend "Birth of the Demon." It has awesome painted art by Norm Breyfogle and the best in-depth origin of Ra's Al Ghul ever told.

That sounds awesome. Breyfogle is my favorite Bat artist ever.

Looks like I'll be getting Long Halloween on my next trip to the graphic novel store.

just accept that he rips off scenes from the Godfather, Presumed Innocent, Silence of the Lambs, and probably a bunch more, and rips off themes/etc from Bats Yr. One, and enjoy it for what it is. ;-) :-D
