Best Warren Ellis works?

Postby TimDrake'sDumbWings » Thu Aug 30, 2012 10:39 am

Hi, all.

A conversation in the "What Graphic Novel Are You Reading?" thread got me thinking.

I love a lot of the stuff I've read from Warren Ellis (Thunderbolts, Authority, Nextwave, Crooked Little Vein, Fell). However, with all of his small-small press stuff (Freakangels) and his random work on Marvel properties (Excalibur, Counter-X, X-Men), it's hard to figure out what else is worth reading.

What are some of your favorite, must-read Warren Ellis works? For me, it'd have to be Fell (which made me able to tolerate Templesmith's art) and Nextwave (every page of that book is pure comedy).

I'm reading Fell for the first time today. It's been spectacular.

It's Planetary, by like a mile.

Close the thread.

Planetary
Global Frequency
Transmetropolitan
Nextwave
Iron Man: Extremis

And the unfinished Fell and Desolation Jones are worth a look if you like warped crime fiction.

Hab is of course, absolutely right.

If by Planetary, he meant Transmetropolitan.

I think that's the issue with Ellis. He's quite prolific, works with some of the greatest artists in the business, and most of his work is phenomenal. So it's hard to narrow down what's what.

Has anybody read his Excalibur? I've been contemplating picking that up for a while.

How could I forget Extremis!?!?!? The one-two punch of that and Iron Man: The Inevitable turned me into an Iron Man fan.

Of his work that I have read, I have only really loved Thunderbolts. Planetary and Authority were readable, and X-men: Ghost Box and Transmet were execrable.

If you really like Ellis give Crecy a try. Its a cheap little story but its a fun read.

No one here like the Authority?

I'll throw Planetary and Nextwave there.
