heh, all you Hal-haters make me giggle.
as for the issue in question: OK, i'm just gonna say it...awesome. this event keeps getting better with every issue.
i know a lot of folks bitch about events, and DC events in particular, and how the continuity is impenetrable and too tied up into the events yadda yadda, but for people like me who actually have been reading DC longer than a year or so, and who can remember beyond what i had for breakfast this morning, this book is tremendous. it's been just about the perfect DC event so far: it's tying up long-standing, logically-building plot threads, it's readable and understandable solely through reading the main mini (although the GL books help too), and it's full of cool bits and easter eggs for the old fans without making them huge parts of the story for neophytes who may not understand them. add in terrific art (did i say terrific? i meant TERRIFIC...that fight spread on pages 2-3 took my breath away), gut-wrenching emotional moments, solid characterization, and rip-roaring action and twists and turns and this book has me salivating for each new issue.
my favorite stuff this issue:
Ralph's comments to Ray about Jean
Barry's dressing-down of Hal
Hal's mention of the Ray and Halo as possible go-to's (about damn time, Johns! Halo needs some face-time!)
the Unknown Soldier "I have a NAME!"
the one-panel screen shot of Ragman (a perfect easter egg addition...i wish Shadowpact was still around just so i could see an issue with Ragman fighting a horde of BLs made up of the people whose souls power his costume)
and of course the Ronnie/Jason/Gehenna scene -- brutal is the only word for it...that scene was ROUGH
