Bluewater Figures Out Way to Put Out Neil Gaiman Comic Without Neil Gaiman

Gaiman will join the likes of Sarah Palin and Paula Deen as he gets his own Bluewater biography comic.

Source: Press Release

Legendary writer Neil Gaiman is highly sought after in the comic book business. With classic works like Sandman to his credit, Gaiman equals not only guaranteed sales, but probably critical acclaim as well. So it's only natural that Bluewater Comics would want to publish a Neil Gaiman comic. There's only one problem though: they're Bluewater Comics, and he's Neil Gaiman.

Luckily, the company has found a workaround. Fame: Neil Gaiman hits comic shops tomorrow, from writer Anthony Laplume and artist Marco Gerratana. Sure, Neil Gaiman has nothing to do with the comic. But it's a comic about Neil Gaiman. That's almost as good, right?

Let's just assume that it is. What's really confusing us is that Gaiman's comic is being published as part of Bluewater's Fame line, along with such other subjects as Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, Taylor Swift, One Direction, and pretty much the entire cast of Twilight, rather than, say, as part of the Orbit line, with Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, writers George R. R. Martin and Stephen King, Keith Richards, and the cast of Dr. Who, where Gaiman would, to most, appear to fit more appropriately.

Is this some sort of purposeful slight? Is Neil Gaiman some kind of teen dreamboat? We have to admit: it's somewhat baffling.

Maybe Bluewater just didn't give a crap, and just wanted to get this thing out there as quickly as possible while Sandman: Overture is in stores and hype for Gaiman's Miracleman work is getting hype from Marvel.

In any case, here's the description of the book. Pick it up... we guess?

Fame: Neil Gaiman

Writer: Anthony Laplume

Artist: Marco Gerratana

Neil Gaiman started out humbly in the so-called British Invasion of comics in the 1980s, writing rock and roll biographies, but soon leaped into the vanguard with his revolutionary series The Sandman, which helped launch the Vertigo imprint at DC.  His newfound literary acclaim helped launch Gaiman into the world of books, which he soon conquered with equal acclaim and passionate following from readers.  Gaiman is also one of the few comic book writers of his generation to make a successful transition into film.  Despite all this, he wasn't immune to the growing controversies of the '90s comic book scene, embroiled for years over the legal minutiae of creator rights.  Gaiman has managed to transcend all boundaries, however, a true icon for our times.

The author of this comic chiming in. Thanks for writing about it. I don't know how revolutionary any of it is, but as a fan I was certainly pleased to be involved in the project.
