The trend of rebooting old characters to boost sales goes a step too far with the new Captain Marvel from Marvel Comics.
Originally a Fawcett Comics hero, Billy Batson, a youth, is chosen by the lecherous wizard Shazam to become a champion for the forces of good. Whenever Batson says the wizard's name, he is struck by a magical lightning bolt that transform in into the adult Captain Marvel, a magical superhero imbued with the powers of super strength, super speed, super stamina, super smarts, lightning bolts, flight, and invulnerability. The character became a part of the DC Universe in 1972, where he remained until the nu52 reboot last year. However, while a character named Shazam does appear in nuDCU titles, he obviously bears no resemblance to the original, leading the Outhouse to believe that the rights to Captain Marvel have been sold to rival Marvel Comics to make way for this reboot.Marvel's new version of the character is different from the old in every way. First of all, the new character is a woman, lending credence to the recent outcries of sexism in the comic industry from websites such as Bleeding Cool (the comic is written by a woman as well - Kelly Sue Deconnick - deepening concerns). Further, the new Captain Marvel's costume is nothing like the old, as you can see in the pictures below, and neither are her powers. Worse, "Carol Danvers" is a full-grown adult with military experience, a far cry from Batson, the innocent youth. In truth, it appears the only similarities between the characters is that both have a handsome, masculine haircut. The Outhouse understands that comics need to make money, and it appreciates any creative attempts to do so, but the trend of rebooting comics and characters has gone too far this time.
This is The Outhouse, home of news that is serious, Jude Terror reporting.
