Read about one of the Outhousers' favorite characters in the weekly Character Spotlight! This week, we look at Nexus!
In an Internet filled with overwhelming negativity and pointless hatred of frivolous stuff, it's sometimes necessary to take a step back, take a deep breath and remember why we enjoy comics in the first place. Character Spotlight is a weekly feature showcasing some of the Outhouse's favorite characters that epitomize why we read comics. Maybe you'll learn something, maybe you won't, but regardless we hope you enjoy the Outhouse's Character Spotlight!
Origin StoryHoratio Hellpop, son of Theodore Hellpop is best known to the galaxy as Nexus The Liberator as he executes dictators and mass murders. As a result many have been saved from tyrannical despots. Horatio's origins begin with his father, the governor of the planet Vradic. His father was a communist ruler, placed there by the interstellar Sov Government. During an uprising resulting in his power being over thrown, Theodore Hellpop chose the ultimate resolution, to destroy the world itself and all life on it. He did, however, escape with his pregnant wife in a small craft. After an involuntary trip through a black hole, the damaged craft found itself in the orbit of the planet (really a moon) Ylum. It was there that Theodore and his wife found a city scale complex beneath the surface with more then enough resources to sustain them and their son Horatio, who was born on Ylum. It was there that Horatio would grow up with two alien friends, Alph and Beta. Both were thought of as imaginary by Theodore, but were in fact real. Horatio's mother would die in the corridors of Ylum while Horatio was still young. As a young man, Horatio would be tormented with dreams of his father on Vradic. This would lead him to become Nexus, with the guidance of Alph and Beta. It would also lead to his first execution, his father Theodore. As time passed, Horatio would dream of others, mass murders, despots... and was compelled to execute them to end the agony of the dreams. Empowered with the abilities of fusion-casting, flight, and telepathy, Horatio would liberate many peoples across the galaxy with his executions. Some of those people would follow him back to Ylum, to populate the world and support Horatio. After a time and exploring the deeper sections of Ylum, Horatio would find the source of his powers - The ancient and insane alien called The Merk, a being claiming to have had a similar role in it's own society and now passing along the drive to Horatio.
Character AppealThe character's greatest appeal is not being a typical super-hero while having all the basic cosmetics. Instead we have a driven character trying best to fit in with a society he originally felt nothing for but grew to become more human. This journey with many bumps along the way shows a more human character that despite being an executioner, was hailed more as a liberator of the oppressed then a cold hearted killer. In some ways, if the character of Dexter appeals, then Nexus should as well, as both continue to learn about themselves and their drives.
Top StorylinesThe top storylines of Nexus are literally the series itself but some of the best points have always been the introduction of new supporting characters such as Horatio love Sundra Peale, his best friend Judah Maccabee and his friends and followers, the aliens Kreed and Sinclair. Add to this the point where Horatio walks away from being Nexus and several others take over the role for various reasons, such as the Loomis Sisters who wanted revenge on Horatio for executing their father... and then there's Stanislaus Korivitsky, an insane man with a desire to just kill. As said, the entire 102 issues plus spin-off mini-series is one big enjoyable storyline concerning Horatio and his journey from an isolated life to one rich with all sorts of people.
Nexus Can Even Beat SupermanYes, he can, as he is already owned by his creators and they can do anything they wish as they created him. In addition, the character exists in real time, something rather rare in comics. Horatio has fathered children who have grown in real time and his character progressed in ways that Superman never could. Plus, there's the rich setting of the future filled with aliens of all sorts, both strange and quirky.
Where is Nexus now?Presently you can still find Nexus via Dark Horse Publishing as they continue to publish an Archives series containing (reprinting) the original run as well as trade collections from Rude Dude Productions.
