Comic-con staying in San Diego through 2016

The SD will stay with the CC until at least 2016 as city officials announce the extension of comic-con's current contract.

Comic-con is actually the biggest annual event in San Diego, bringing more than 130,000 people in annually and has outgrown the convention center.  This has caused other cities to attempt to lure the show away from San Diego as it has expanded into neighboring hotels and parks.  So it was good news for the city and fans that want the convention to stay there when they announced the extension of their current contract to 2016.

The city hopes to begin construction for an expansion of the convention center next year and have it opened by 2016.  The annual convention brings in over $180 million to the local economy and the city itself makes another $3 million in taxes.

The expansion will allow for additional panels and attendees, but the extension was not based upon the expansion, the city simply hopes it will give them the edge in resigning the convention after 2016.  This reporter, after attending SDCC, cannot image it being bigger and busier than it already is, but in a few years it looks like we won't have to imagine it.
