Comic Creators who've said no to the big 2

Postby Jubilee » Thu Apr 26, 2012 6:27 am

Well it's kicking off. I've been predicting it for years, but it seems to be speeding up. Before Watchmen seems to have put the cat among the pigeons.

There are creators who are turning their back on the creatively bankrupt blackhole that is Marvel and DC. They've said no to Avengers v X-men, they've said no to the Ultimate U/616 crossover. They've said no to reboots, crisis' and Before Watchmen, and they're producing some fantastic work.

Leading the field are creators like:

Mark Millar,
Greg Rucka,
Duncan Rouleau,
Joe Casey,
Stephen. T. Seagle,
BKV,
James Robinson
Greg Rucka,
Joe Kelly,
Robert Kirkman,
Ed Brubaker (mostly)
Grant Morrison
Mike Mignola
Alan Moore
and Chris Roberson.

If you haven't noticed btw, these are creators who've all surpassed most comic writers today in terms of getting their work seen. They don't need to write Avengers #593 or Justice League Returns part 4 or 8 tying into the Reborn Universe crossover coming next year.

They've furthered their careers by leaving behind a cesspool of mediocrity.

This thread is a celebration of these writers. I hope others join them soon (I'm looking at you Bru and Bendis)

Who do you think will be next to go?

While I'm here, I thought I'd also criticise those writers who've never tried to branch out with their own ideas or original properties. People like Brubaker, Morrison and Bendis at least try and get new thoughts out.

But people like
Simone,
Johns
and Slott. Come on!

Millar doesn't count. Marvel's still distributing most of his Icon books.

Meh, he's done with the big 2 he says. I've seen interviews where he complains how hamstrung you are writing for them. Publishing wise he might have a deal, but he's done with the big superheroes now I think. Shame as he wrote probably the most popular superhero comic of the last decade.

Do you boycott all Time-Warner products?
However, Liefeld is an enigma wrapped in a pouch-filled, muscular, footless conundrum.

Mark Millar's output has basically sucked since the last the first volume of the ultimates.

Old Man logan was okay for what it was, but I give a lot of credit to the art on that book.

This may be changing in the near future. I heard something from one of the artists in Boston. Not sure if I can say something.

I'm not sure how much you can praise Millar for leaving the Big 2. He has the luxury to do so only because he spend fifteen years working for them. If it wasn't for Ultimates, Ultimate X-Men, Civil War, Red Son, Authority, etc, etc, we wouldn't even know who Mark Millar is.

I praise him because it'd be easy to carry on working there, and make his way in life rehashing superhero stories over and over. He's chosen to do more than that, and even thought I'm not a massive fan of his work, at least he is doing something new.

Fair play to him for that I say.

I wouldn't call "Welcome to Tranquility" unoriginal.
