DC Comics State of the Universe Address: Countdown from 52

Postby LOLtron » Tue Oct 04, 2011 5:49 pm

The President of The Outhouse ranks DC Comics' Nu52 from worst to first in a Countdown of the New 52 #1's!

When I heard about DC's reboot, I thought it was a stupid idea. I didn't have a problem with the idea of starting over, but it sounded half-assed that some books would be a complete reboot while others would only have small changes. The new JLA armor look and creative teams didn't really make me feel much better about it.

But then I thought to myself, "Stop bitching. You've wanted a comic company to try something daring for a while." So I made the decision to buy every New 52 book, no matter how much I didn't like the characters or the creative team.

Now before I start my list, let me give you my recent history with DC Comics. I am a huge Geoff Johns fan. I will buy anything he writes. Also, here is a list of all the DC Comics I bought before the reboot:

  • Green Lantern Corps
  • Flashpoint
  • Detective Comics
  • Secret Six
  • Flash
  • Green Lantern

Not too much as you can see.

So let's get to it. I will now list the New 52 comics from worst to first, with Pros, Cons and If I Will Keep Buying for each one. Enjoy!

DC Comics Nu52

52. Red Hood and the Outlaws

Pros: There were no pros involved in this issue, only amateurs. The only nice thing I can say about this book is that it wasn't the worst plot of the 52.

Cons: Sloppy editing. Lots of grammar mistakes. It looks like it was edited by a 5-year-old. Why is Roy Harper hanging out with a guy that tried to kill one of his best friends? Stupid plot for a #1 issue. Roy banging Starfire is how you want to introduce your readers to a new group?

Will I Keep Buying: No chance in hell.

DC Comics Nu52

51. Justice League

Pros: Again, it wasn't really the worst of the bunch, but there was a lot of hype about this particular book and it was a huge disappointment. Nice art, of course.

Cons: It's too much of a slow burn. Is this the Justice League or Brave and the Bold with Batman and Green Lantern? And why are they trying to out-dick each other? It was just a pointless issue.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes, out of morbid curiosity.

DC Comics Nu52

50. Green Arrow

Pros: At least JT Krul is off the book soon. The art is pretty good.

Cons: Everything else. This was really the worst book of the bunch.

Will I Keep Buying: Never.

DC Comics Nu52

49. OMAC

Pros: The art is ok.

Cons: This is like a Jack Kirby book barfing on a 90s book. Every panel is a square. It literally is drawn like a 90s book. Was that Giffen's doing or Didio's, I wonder? The character sucks too.

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

48. Men of War

Pros: Lots of explosions?

Cons: What the hell was going on?

Will I Keep Buying: This was never for me and it never will be.

DC Comics Nu52

47. Catwoman

Pros: The sex scene controversy. It was pretty funny.

Cons: The rest of the cheesecake. She was half-naked at the start, the middle and at the end. What was the point?

Will I Keep Buying: No, unless there's more controversy so I can make sure this comic exists to piss off Herald.

DC Comics Nu52

46. Hawk and Dove

Pros: They kept female Dove.

Cons: The 8 million subplots, the main plot and of course, Rob Liefeld.

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

45. Deathstroke

Pros: The ending. I always liked Deathstroke.

Cons: Two minor things: the plot and the art. At times Deathstroke looks slim and at other times he looks like the Hulk.

Will I Keep Buying: Sadly no.

DC Comics Nu52

44. Captain Atom

Pros: The art.

Cons: This was like reading an encyclopedia. How about shutting up a bit so we can read a story?

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

43. Superboy

Pros: The "test."

Cons: I think they should have skipped this origin story. Why should we care about this character on his own?

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

42. Grifter

Pros: A character with a cool look and unlimited potential. They could go anywhere with this...

Cons: ...so of course they make him a whining pussy. The story was also nonsensical.

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

41. Red Lanterns

Pros: The art is great. Dex-Starr is awesome.

Cons: After the initial battle, it is all downhill from there. There is no reason for Atrocitus to want to be a hero.

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

40. Blackhawks

Pros: I just didn't hate it as much as others.

Cons: The battle scene was very confusing. These characters are all clichés.

Will I Keep Buying: Nope.

DC Comics Nu52

39. Supergirl

Pros: There wasn't anything really wrong with this comic.

Cons: But that's the problem. It is like a paint by numbers issue. It is exactly how a Supergirl origin would be written by anyone who knows the character. How about a bit of a risk?

Will I Keep Buying: Only if I hear something good about this later on.

DC Comics Nu52

38. Firestorm

Pros: The gratuitous opening.

Cons: The attempt to create problems between Ronnie and Jason because of race. The terrible dialogue.

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

37. Mister Terrific

Pros: A decent attempt to update a boring character...

Cons: ...who still remains boring. I hate that he's proud of being the third smartest guy. Imagine if all characters did this. The art.

Will I Keep Buying: Never liked the character anyway.

DC Comics Nu52

36. Static Shock

Pros: Might be fun for the kiddies.

Cons: Another 90s inspired book.

Will I Keep Buying: Not for me.

DC Comics Nu52

35. All-Star Western

Pros: The ending may have save it.

Cons: Booooooooooring. The price. Too much unnecessary psychobabble. Why did we need to hear Arkham's opinions about Hex's family life. It was trying too hard.

Will I Keep Buying: Maybe it gets better in trade.

DC Comics Nu52

34. Voodoo

Pros: I love Basri's art.

Cons: So now that the shapechanger isn't Voodoo anymore, are they going to rename the book? Why should I even care about this? Too many clichés.

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

33. Savage Hawkman

Pros: I like the idea of Indiana Hawkman.

Cons: But instead we were given Carter Blaze, Hawk Rider. The whole issue felt like a Ghost Rider issue (get rid of the demon/wings, I don't want the responsibility anymore, oh look, a demon!).

Will I Keep Buying: No thanks.

DC Comics Nu52

32. Batgirl

Pros: It wasn't a bad issue. I really like Gail Simone and enjoyed the art.

Cons: That was an epicly stupid ending. The cop is yelling that Batgirl is a murderer when the actual murderer is STANDING RIGHT THERE!! It was such a dumb ending that it ruined all the positives of this issue.

Will I Keep Buying: I will give it another chance.

DC Comics Nu52

31. Justice League International

Pros: I like the characters.

Cons: No need for Batman. Did every character need to get a line in every panel? It felt like a bad Bendis issue. They don't need to all talk at all times.

Will I Keep Buying: Maybe in trade

DC Comics Nu52

30. Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E.

Pros: It's like BPRD.

Cons: It's like BPRD.

Will I Keep Buying: Maybe.

DC Comics Nu52

29. LEGION of Super-Heroes

Pros: Introducing all the characters is important when there are so many.

Cons: The last panel was meh. Too many worthless characters.

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

28. Blue Beetle

Pros: I liked the looks of the villains. The fight scene was cool.

Cons: The prologue gives me a bad feeling of where this is going.

Will I Keep Buying: Probably not.

DC Comics Nu52

27. Birds of Prey

Pros: Gets right to the point. Introduces the characters in a good way.

Cons: The dialogue was choppy. It really takes you out of the book at times.

Will I Keep Buying: Probably not.

DC Comics Nu52

26. Action Comics

Pros: Superman: Year One.

Cons: Superman's motivations are dumb. Superman in jeans is dumb. Also, this should probably be a miniseries. The ending was right out of Spider-Man 2.

Will I Keep Buying: Probably yes. I want to see where this goes.

DC Comics Nu52

25. Batman and Robin

Pros: Some decent action.

Cons: I hate Damian Wayne. The art was inconsistent.

Will I Keep Buying: Probably not.

DC Comics Nu52

24. Stormwatch

Pros: Interesting concept.

Cons: Martian Manhunter in this group.

Will I Keep Buying: In trade if I hear good things.

DC Comics Nu52

23. Swamp Thing

Pros: It was interesting, to say the least.

Cons: Honestly, I'm not sure. I just didn't feel the need to read more.

Will I Keep Buying: Probably not.

DC Comics Nu52

22. Batwoman

Pros: Lots of stuff happens.

Cons: The art annoyed me.

Will I Keep Buying: No interest.

DC Comics Nu52

21. Green Lantern

Pros: I like the writing. I already said I like Johns.

Cons: Not sure why this wasn't rebooted.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

20. Suicide Squad

Pros: I didn't hate this as much as others. I liked it as one issue.

Cons: A bit predictable. The cover sucked.

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

19. Green Lantern: New Guardians

Pros: The art. Interesting premise.

Cons: Could go either way.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

18. Green Lantern Corps

Pros: Bored Green Lanterns. The ending.

Cons: Not too many. It was solid, but not exceptional.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

17. Batman The Dark Knight

Pros: The art. The first 21 pages.

Cons: The last page. What a terrible ending.

Will I Keep Buying: No.

DC Comics Nu52

16. Teen Titans

Pros: I like the new take on these characters. I like the new Red Robin look.

Cons: Kid Flash pulling a Speedball.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

15. Justice League Dark

Pros: Lots of interesting characters pulled together.

Cons: Not too many.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes, for now.

DC Comics Nu52

14. Flash

Pros: I'm a Flash mark.

Cons: Not sure about Manupal as a writer.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

13. I, Vampire

Pros: I liked it, but not as much as others. Cool story. Fialkov is a future star. Very nice atmosphere.

Cons: The cover made this the last book I read. It is awful. The confusing dialogue boxes. The art was a bit too "dark" which made things a bit confusing.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes, for sure.

DC Comics Nu52

12. Detective Comics

Pros: Very atmospheric. Nice ending. I like the art.

Cons: Very basic detective skills.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes, for now.

DC Comics Nu52

11. Wonder Woman

Pros: I like the gruesome Greek myth stuff.

Cons: The cover is ugly.

Will I Keep Buying: A decent Wonder Woman story? I'll try it.

DC Comics Nu52

10. Nightwing

Pros: I like the art. I like the return to the circus. The villain looks cool.

Cons: It was fun, but not awesome.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

9. LEGION Lost

Pros: Fun fish out of water stories could come of this.

Cons: I'm not sure how long they can continue this without it becoming Gilligan's Island.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

8. Demon Knights

Pros: Pretty cool premise. I am a sucker for stories like this.

Cons: I'm worried this will be cancelled in 6 issues.

Will I Keep Buying: For sure.

DC Comics Nu52

7. Superman

Pros: I love the new take on Superman and Daily Planet. It's back to basics Superman without doing anything stupid.

Cons: Perez is already leaving.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

6. Batwing

Pros: Nice job making the environment matter. A real mystery. I enjoyed the massacre at the end.

Cons: Not too many.

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

5. Resurrection Man

Pros: This one caught me by surprise. I loved him getting sucked into the plane engine. Abnett and Lanning FTW.

Cons: Madame Xanadu

Will I Keep Buying: Yes.

DC Comics Nu52

4. Batman

Pros: A real detective comic. Dick as Joker. Dick being framed? Snyder is the best Batman writer.

Cons: None.

Will I Keep Buying: For sure.

DC Comics Nu52

3. DC Universe Presents: Deadman

Pros: I love Quantum Leap Deadman. It's good that Deadman is looking for a purpose.

Cons: This should just be a Deadman comic, not a DCU Presents. Also, not sure about the Indian god at the end.

Will I Keep Buying: As long as Deadman is in it.

DC Comics Nu52

2. Aquaman

Pros: I love the breaking of the 4th wall about what the world thinks of Aquaman. Bendis should take note. The art was fantastic. Did I mention that this is already the best Aquaman story I've read?

Cons: It's Aquaman.

Will I Keep Buying: As long as Johns is writing it.

DC Comics Nu52

1. Animal Man

Pros: Great, creepy story. Lots of mystery while keeping the family man aspect in the story.

Cons: Should have been a Vertigo book. The art concerns me.

Will I Keep Buying: Hell yes.

So I went from buying 6 DCU books to 21 next month. It looks like DC is doing their job in getting people like me to keep reading. My only problem is that while I am buying more comics from DC, less than a handful are really awesome comics. Most of them range from shit to good, but other than Animal Man, I don't see any instant classics in the bunch. I hope that the ones I am reading step up their game and get better.

Don't you guys hurt yourselves patting yourselves on the back. lol

Was a good article though.

I think I'll be sticking with Animal Man, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Detective (for now), Batwoman, Stormwatch and Grifter and Voodoo to see where they are going, same with Justice League.

Probably check out Resurrection Man after seeing this article.

Odd that you don't rate Green Arrow lower but say it's the worst though...

Green Arrow was the worst story, but it didn't have the expectations of JL or the sloppiness of Red Hood.
