If we're going to start blasting IMAX shots of naked medical/science officers for no reason besides because they could, at least give us a few Bones pics." But was sure to add they thought the scene was ridiculous.  My feelings wouldn't be hurt if the scene wasn't in the movie, but often notice there isn't much of an uproar when the situation is reversed.  My biggest issue about it was that it was used in a viral video campaign for the movie, putting the scene in a spotlight that made it stand out.  If you are going to point to the men being half naked as well, yet not highlight them, you can't be surprised the scene would get extra attention.    What I found more interesting was a <a href="http://thisfeliciaday.tumblr.com/post/50858883769/star-trek-movie-spoilerzzzz">blog post from actress Felicia Day</a> about the movie where she took notice that the movie was lacking in strong women.  Feeling Carol Marcus (pictured above) served as little more than damsel in distress and Uhura mostly only served to humanize Spock.  Mainly she points to the scene where Kirk and all the Admirals are sitting around the big table and get attacked, not seeing any women there.  I think she is on the money with that specific point and think they could have been well served by having a woman or two sitting around the table (unless there was and both her and I don't remember), but do take issue with how the two female leads are described.    (Beware Spoilers) Carol Marcus is not a warrior, she his much more like Scotty who isn't going to fight his way out of every situation with his fists.  She saves the Enterprise by confronting her father and then is put in a situation where, yes, she does need to be saved from, but so would any of the male characters put in that situation (ala Pike in the first movie).  But nobody notices when a dude in distress gets saved.  Carol Marcus also saves Bones earlier in the movie by risking her life, but I guess since she doesn't do it with a spinning back kick, it doesn't count.    As for Uhura, I thought it her confronting the Klingons alone was a pretty big deal and when the shit hit the fan, she was right in the mix with everyone else in the fight.  Not to mention she played a key role against the villain in the climax.  I don't think either of these women were treated badly in the movie, a franchise that is pretty much about the three-way between Spock, Kirk and Bones, where everyone else is a second tier character next to the trio.  Some characters orbit a bit closer than others to the trio, Scotty being one of them, and in the new version of Star Trek, Uhura is now there was well (and not just because of her relationship with Spock).    Mostly, I think this is about sensitivity to an issue close to someone's heart.  Nothing wrong with that, but once it is brought to the masses on the internet it grows from there, and once people that are just hating on the movie add it to their list of complaints, it becomes something else.  If we are going to skip gratiutious partial nudity in movies, let's not forget about the shirtless men (or boys - I'm looking at you Jacob!).  If we are going to complain about revealing superhero outfits on women, let's not forget skin tight uniforms on men that serve as little more than a second skin.  If we are going to get rid of damsels in distress, then lets not forget about the men either, which means Scotty doesn't get rescued by Kirk, Spock doesn't get saved by Uhura, Bones doesn't get saved by Carol Marcus, Kirk doesn't get saved by John Harrison, and so on.    In the end, the two female stars of the movie were treated just like everyone else, which is how it should be.  If there is a number one complaint about Star Trek Into Darkness, it should be about how Cumberbatch over-enunciated everything.   Written or Contributed by xaraan<div class="hrClear"><hr></div> <a rel='nofollow' href='http://www.theouthousers.com/index.php/features/122261.html'>READ THIS ARTICLE ON THE FRONT PAGE, HUMANS!</a> Statistics : 11 Replies || 93 Views Post by LOLtron LOLtron The News Stand - Digest http://www.theouthousers.com/forum/the-news-stand/star-trek-into-darkness-writer-damon-lindelof-apologizes-for-gratuitous-underwear-scene-t94551.html Re: 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Writer Damon Lindelof Apologiz http://www.theouthousers.com/forum/the-news-stand/star-trek-into-darkness-writer-damon-lindelof-apologizes-for-gratuitous-underwear-scene-t94551.html#p10188814 Tue, 21 May 2013 15:51:05 GMT <h5><a href="http://www.theouthousers.com/forum/the-news-stand/" title="The News Stand">The News Stand</a></h5> Re: 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Writer Damon Lindelof Apologiz <blockquote><div><cite>Punchy wrote:</cite>I think all that needs to be said is that Kirk was in his underwear too.</div></blockquote> His scene was definitely not as pose-y as Marcus' though. Character Spotlight is a weekly feature showcasing some of the Outhouse's favorite characters that epitomize why we read comics. Maybe you'll learn something, maybe you won't, but regardless we hope you enjoy the Outhouse's Character Spotlight!   <img alt="" src="http://www.theouthousers.com/images/jck/CharProfile/Duela/duela1.jpg" style="width: 320px; height: 390px;" />  <h2 style="text-align: center; margin-bottom: 0in;"> - Duela Dent aka The Joker's Daughter -</h2>   Origin Story   There have been three previous versions of this character. The Pre-Crisis version: well, just like her “poppa,” pick a card, any card. She's claimed to be the child of the following Batman villains: Joker, Two-Face, Riddler, Scarecrow, Catwoman, and Penguin. The only truth we know is that in her final Pre-Crisis appearance (Tales of the Teen Titans #50), she appeared sans make-up and apparently much older than she was letting on, eliminating Two-Face from the list of suspects.   She's gone by various unique identities, including Harlequin, Card Queen, Scarecrone and Catgirl. She's also been a member of the Teen Titans.   The Post-Crisis version is a bit more complicated. A version of the character appeared in Team Titans, but the whole concept of that team was later to be revealed as a glitch due to the time distortion hijinks of Zero Hour (to best explain the event go to this link *insert Doctor Who timey wimey).     <img alt="" src="http://www.theouthousers.com/images/jck/CharProfile/Duela/duela2.jpg" style="width: 265px; height: 523px;" />   Now the actual Post-Crisis version first appeared during the Justice League/Titans crossover: Technis Imperative. We didn't learn the character's actual origin until after she had been killed in Countdown (aka Countdown to Final Crisis aka probably one of ten issues of the entire fifty-two you should even read). She is the daughter of the Jokerster and Three-Face (heroic versions of the Joker and a female Two-Face), plus originally from Earth-3. Through her madness she was able to jump between multiple Earths. This little feat would catch-up to her eventually.   The character is also featured in the Ame-Comi online exclusive series. This version, like the Post-Crisis one, is actually the daughter of the Joker, aka Jack Dent, and isactually one of the villains of the series.   Character Appeal:   Much like her “father” the appeal she has is her chaotic nature, but with an actual good twist instead (at least in the main-line DC books).   <img alt="" src="http://www.theouthousers.com/images/jck/CharProfile/Duela/duela3.jpg" style="width: 362px; height: 546px;" />     Top Story-lines:     Pre-Crisis     The Batman Family #6 (First Appearance) – Befuddles Robin (Dick Grayson) with various crimes, and begins her game with the hero of deducing the other's identity.   The Batman Family #8 – Figures out Dick Grayson is Robin.   The Fiddler's Concert of Crime (Teen Titans #48) – Duela joins the Teen Titans and helps capture the Fiddler.   Teen Titans v.1 #49-53 – Continues on with the Team until the book's cancellation.   Detective Comics v. 1 #482 - She infiltrates a criminal organization called MAZE and teams with Robin (Dick Grayson).   Tales of the Teen Titans #50 – Appears in a cameo appearance without costume at Donna Troy's wedding to Terry Long.   <img alt="" src="http://www.theouthousers.com/images/jck/CharProfile/Duela/duela5.jpg" style="width: 400px; height: 307px;" />     Post-Crisis     JLA/Titans: Technis Imperative (#2-3) – Is one of many Titans recruited by Vic Stone aka Cyborg to help the Titans combat the Justice League in order to save him from the out of control Technis technology overwhelming him.   Titans Secret Files #2 – Crashes a recruitment drive for Titans on the West Coast with several of Beast Boy's villains. She is defeated and sent back to the asylum.   Teen Titans/Outsiders Secret Files #2 – Duela talks with several villains and does her usual routine explaining to them that she's the daughter of several super-villains through various ways.   Titans Tomorrow (Teen Titans v. 3 #17) – We find out that an alternate version of her is the catalyst that twists the Titans of the Future into being more fanatical. Pursuing a more villainous path, Duela murders Batgirl (Cassandra Cain), Alfred Pennyworth, and Bette Kane. These acts back that timeline's Batman (Tim Drake) into murdering her.   Infinite Crisis (Teen Titans v. 3 #32, Infinite Crisis #4, Infinite Crisis HC) – Assists the Teen Titans in fighting Superboy Prime and appears on the side of good guys again in the Battle of Metropolis (in the collected hardcover edition).   Titans East (Teen Titans #43-47) – is probably one of the few positives of the actual story. She joins the villainous Titan team lead by Deathstroke and combats their opposites (as for why she joined the villains, because Slade just asked her). She and the Enigma stand guard and mentally taunt Raven. However, after Raven asks her if she wants to be a Teen Titan, Duela accepts. She then knocks out Enigma and frees Raven.   Duela and fellow cast-off Batgirl (<a href="index.php/features/character-spotlight/14955-character-spotlight-cassandra-cain.html/">Cassandra Cain</a>) join with the Teen Titans against Deathstroke and the remaining members of Titans East. After the battle, both Duela and Cassandra flee.   Death (Countdown #51, Teen Titans #47) – She abducts a male teenager from a nightclub, only to run into the Red Hood aka Jason Todd. The two have a minor throw-down before Duela escapes Jason, only to run into a Monitor, who promptly shoots her dead. Self explanatory thread. I've been reading more and more stuff in trades, so that makes it hard to talk about new comics the week they get released. Last night I read Walking Dead Volume 9. Liked it a lot better than the previous volume. Carl getting a bit more focus this time around was cool. Looking forward to seeing how the book changes now that they're going to be back out on the road with a destination in mind. Secret Warriors vol. 3: Wake the Beast by Hickman & Caselli Basically this keeps the pace of the first two books going. In typical Hickman fashion, this build up to something big. I kind of wish something would happen that in some way significantly advances the plot. This one delved into secret histories and introduced us to the Soviet equivalent of SHIELD and Hydra. Art is still great and of the things I consistently like about this book. After a quick chat about the importance/relevance of the Tower with Randall, Monroe sets out after her. Doctor Todd or maybe Tom, whatever, the guy who sort of betrayed Rachel but only after she betrayed him, he saves Nora and brings her to the rebel’s hospital, where she deliriously confesses to spilling the beans on the rebels to Monroe. Miles forgives her, because he’s just a swell guy like that. Charlie and Jason make out for a while more, but they’re interrupted by some creepy guy watching them. Our rebels take off to try to beat Monroe to the tower- Nora’s along for the ride, too, because why not? Meanwhile, in Colorado/the Plains Nation (Andrew Jackson is probably upset), Randall can’t get into the tower, which isn’t really a tower so much as a bunker. The storm encroaches ever faster, threatening to drown the city in thunder and lightning. Oh, wait, sorry, that’s the weather ticker at the bottom. I got distracted because it was more interesting. Anyway Rachel decides she’s going to go kill Monroe to avenge Danny, so Aaron is going to have to figure out the power stuff. Meanwhile, the rebels are being picked off one-by-one. Miles decides to ferret out the mole and retrieve the missing Nora in one fell swoop. He tosses everyone’s weapons into the helicopter they took (the doc brought one of the magic power medallions when he saved Nora) and very quickly finds her. Meanwhile, everyone argues about who’s the bad guy- there’s plenty of motive to go around, and not nearly enough trust. Eventually they conclude it’s Nora herself- the truth serum they used to torture her drove her insane and turned her into Wonder Woman. Except like, less useless. Some stuff happens, several more people get accused and it is unexciting, and all you really need to know is that they figure out it’s been Jim the whole time! Remember Jim? Miles’ friend from Annapolis? Yeah, he’s been with them the whole time and I still forgot about him. Jim and Miles fight whilst Jim “explains” why he’s done this. Something about blaa blaa blaa losing everything. He very nearly takes Miles, but Jason shoots him in the head, then gives his dad a weird knowing look. Charlie apologises for accusing Jason of being the mole and he gets all salty. Now that all the ancillary characters are disposed of, the group takes off in the helicopter. Rachel, meanwhile, has snuck into Monroe’s tent with a grenade. She pulls the pin, aaaand….. FIN.
