KING King Impulse

Teenage Wasteland

Postby KING King Impulse » Sat Apr 10, 2010 3:11 pm

I got The Flash: Secret Files and Origins today, and while it was fine, the story was OK enough, and Manapul's art was fantastic, Geoff Johns' need to explain everything is really getting on my nerves.

First of all he gave us the origin of Hal Jordan's bomber jacket. Great, thanks Geoff, we needed to know that.

Then, the origin of Barry Allen's bowtie, because a forensic scientist couldn't possibly have chosen to wear anything as nerdy as a bowtie on purpose, we need to devote a whole load of time explaining why he ended up wearing one all the time.

Then Superman: Secret Origin has everyone connected to each other. Parasite gets his origin thanks to Luthor and Superman's already there when he goes on a rampage. Also, Lois Lane has a romantic past, albeit brief, with the man that goes on to be Metallo. Haven't we seen this before? Oh yeah, Carol Ferris used to date Green Lantern supervillain Hector Hammond, and I can't remember fully, but I'm pretty sure it was an accident with Abin Sur's ship that went on to give Hammond his transformation and served as the public debut of Hal as Green Lantern.

Now, reading the Secret Files and Origins, it's hinting that Mirror Master and Weather Wizard are both going to learn the true, dark secrets of their individual weapons, because a guy with a wand that controls all the weather has to be taken very, very seriously and there must be a reason for every little thing that happens in comics.

I DON'T GIVE A SHIT WHERE THE STUFF I LOVE COMES FROM, I JUST LOVE THE STUFF I LOVE

He used to be a lot better than this, he used to be a favourite of mine, but I'm starting to side with Twigg more and more every day.

Something tells me the new Flash book is just gonna piss me off.

But yes, I agree though. I like how he gives insight to the way some characters think (especially the villains) but little things like the bowtie and such I really do not care to know...

The new Flash book already pisses me off because its not starring Wally.

I'll buy whatever book that comes out that says The Flash on the cover. I'm probably not the biggest Flash fan on the board, but I'm damn near the top. I miss Wally, but I'm willing to give Barry a chance. Johns' on-the-nose writing is gonna get on my nerves loads though.

I do not mind Barry, but I prefer Wally. I really disliked Barry in Rebirth but I really didn't mind him in Blackest Night.

So, we shall see.

He's just geeking out. He probably gets off by referencing to old continuity, like an iconic bowtie from 40 years ago, even if wasting the time to do it doesn't really progress the story. It sorta shows in all of his work. I suppose he considers it a form of fan service.

You know, CSI: Miami recently did an episode where they revealed the origin of Horatio Caine's sunglasses. I wonder who wrote it...

Reminds me of CHapter One, when John Byrne explained why the spider on the back of Pete's costume changed from blue to black from AF#15 to Amazing #1.

I imagine when you're constantly going over ground that's already been covered, the only way to do it is by giving it some 'meaningful' new twist.

You're finally realizing that Geoff is "fanfiction-alizing" the DCU. This sort of thing is sheer Continuity Porn.

Were fans really craving the origin of the bowtie? Really?

Geoff Johns sucks.

I've completely turned the corner on him.

Used to love his first JSA run, his Flash, early Teen Titans.. but he caters to an aging audience. His writing is basically the comics equivalent of what Bryan Singer did with Superman Returns. Rather than focus on new ideas, he's stuck in the past.

His GL was headed in the right direction, building upon the mythos with SCW and Blackest Night.. but Blackest Night was just horribly paced and a very dull read.

It lacked the focus of SCW. It should've been a smaller event.
