FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “As readers we want Superman to be Superman"

Postby LOLtron » Fri Jun 24, 2011 2:17 pm

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “As readers we want Superman to be SupermanArtist Gene Ha and writer Lowell Francis talk about the Flashpoint tie-in, Project Superman.

What happens when your good intentions go drastically wrong?  That's the subject of this Flashpoint tie-in book.

Neil Sinclair was just the average soldier until he volunteered to become the military's first line of defense against alien and monster threats as part of Project Superman. Alien DNA was grafted onto his own, transforming Neil into "Subject Zero", giving him an entire arsenal of powers. But as his abilities continued to expand and his strength grew, Neil began to lose control. Too powerful to be controlled, he was locked away, until one fateful day in Metropolis during a meteor shower..."The FLASHPOINT event is about good intentions gone wildly out of control. And that's true of our story in PROJECT SUPERMAN too. A few people came in thinking they could control events, but learned there was no steering wheel. It's been a wildly creative book and a completely new look at Superman. I'm glad I got to work with Scott and Lowell on this and seeing the story unwind and change, it's definitely not the book we expected going in," artist Gene Ha told us.

"I love alternate history stories," said plot co-creator and script writer Lowell Francis. "Hite's Law states that "All alternate histories produce zeppelins," so we have those in the background in a couple of spots. In thinking about this, I went back to reread everything I could by Howard Waldrop, the master of these kinds of tales. Ultimately, in talking with Scott, I saw how we could give insight into a slice of the FLASHPOINT history and really explore some characters. I think as readers we want Superman to be Superman - noble, solid, heroic. What happens when the world conspires to thwart that?"

FLASHPOINT: PROJECT SUPERMAN #1 comes from the creative team of Scott Snyder, Lowell Francis, Gene Ha and Art Lyon, and arrives in stores on Wednesday.

Hate the cover, but the solicit has me interested. Sounds like they're trying to make a Superman for a world that doesn't appreciate what he's about.

The placement of the Daily Planet on the cover, added to the overall shape of the building, makes me believe that the artist may have been slightly distracted. Oh, and I don't know if I like the similarities between the synopsis for this and the connection between Hyperion and Redstone from Supreme Power.

I think as readers we want Superman to be Superman - noble, solid, heroic.

Instead, DC gives us a left-leaning pu$$y.

Indeed. The sole reason why I'll pick this one up.

EDIT: Scott Snyder. So not the sole reason.

it really looks like Snyder is gonna be like he is on Gates of Gotham, just 'idea man" and Lowell actually scripting it.

And now we know how "Superman" is the DCnU's first super-hero. It's not Kal-El !(although who doesn't think that meteor shower is his arrival ?)
