In an interview between Gail Simone and Vaneta Rogers at Newsarama, Simone goes into some detail about what's coming up with Batgirl, her new villains, meeting Batwoman, September's issue #0, and Barbara's collision with the Joker !
Simone pointed out that there has been better coordination between the Bat-titles as well as Writers and Editors, and with the titles and characters having been re-established individually they are now finding the connecting threads between it all, giving the Bat-Universe a much more organic feel as well as the cross-overs feeling natural and not forced.
To prepare for the first year of Nu52 Batgirl stories, Simone spent a considerable amount of time speaking with specialists and survivors about this, and the trauma that survivors endure. Many have recurring nightmares that often go on even after the body heals. Simone felt that it was important for Barbara to also experience this as the readers join Barbara's journey to cope and move forward.
"Barbara has always been about inspiring people. She may have been created to boost ratings or whatever, but, the sheer force of having a brainy woman kicking ass in the comics and on television can't be overstated. And of course, Kim Yale and John Ostrander turned lemons into the best lemonade ever by giving Barbara a purpose and glory after the Killing Joke."
When asked about the "collision" between Barbara and the Joker, Simone said:
Yes. It is the once-and-for-all confrontation between the Batgirl and the man who shot and paralyzed her. It does not go as he expected.
This story starts in issue #14, and I have to say, it's pretty shocking. That's all I'll say right now, however.
And on the importance of the events of issue #0, Simone adds:
It's a must to know her history, it's essential, it really is. I don't say this lightly, it will play out forever in her story.
Coming up in "Batgirl":
- Alysia, Barbara's roommate who is currently dating James Jr (although she's not yet aware that he is Barbara's brother or of his past history), will be hugely important.
Batgirl # 12: (August), Batgirl meets Batwoman ! "Two panels in, you know they are completely different."
Batgirl #0: (September), Art by Ed Benes, revealing more of Batgirl's Nu52 past and what drove her to become Batgirl.
Batgirl Annual: (October) pitting Batgirl against Mary the Talon and Catwoman.
Batgirl #14: "Death of the Family" tie-in, as Joker and Barbara Gordon colliding for the first time since he brutally attacked and injured her.
