Gillen Tells The Young Avengers The Party's Over

… and tumblr has a sad.

Source: Young Avengers: The End Of The Season

Kieron Gillen confirmed via his blog on tumblr what fans may have feared after reading Marvel's February 2014 solicitations: Young Avengers ends after issue 15.

Gillen revealed that he and series artist Jamie McKelvie's plans were always to have a contained story and end the title after they made their statement. It appears it took 15 issues to make their statement as they decided to decline more issues when Marvel asked.

So folks, you have until January 2014 to gather up all your feels for the book. There will be no after party after the "Afterparty" issue.

Series editor Lauren Sankovitch is philosophical about it saying that Young Avengers is always in short seasons and wants to "institutionalize" that format. Gillen assured fans that the series would "be back in an excellent new form at a future point".

This is truly, truly sad news. The funniest most fun comic that Marvel had.

This sucks to hear but I am glad this book will return down the road apparently. On a separate note, I hope they bring back Avengers Academy as well in the future.

I was always planning on waiting until the arc was done and then reading the whole thing at once-- it's too bad that the one long arc will be the only one, though. All the same, from what I'm hearing it should be a great read. Looking forward to it.

WTF is this rank?

Honestly, I wish more creative teams did this. I enjoy serial storytelling, but I prefer defined stories versus open ended ones. It keeps the creators and characters from wearing out their welcomes.

Young Avengers is the best ongoing title I've read in 2013 and the best I've seen from Marvel in a long time. It's sad to see it go but if it's Gillen's decision I'm totally fine with it.
