Did you read the issue that expanded Doom's origin AND sent the Baxter Building into space (with the FF trapped inside) and blew it up?

That's one of the best single issues ever!

Yeah, the characters they created and the art was incredible. They covered a lot of ground. I just don't think it reads very well today. I am not a fan of Stan's writing. Never have been. I think his Silver Surfer with John Buscema on art was the best thing he did writing-wise, in that I can still read it today without being bored by the writing style. Also the Silver Surfer with Moebius on art, but that's 80's I think.

I hear ya on Stan's rather dated writing... I slog through it though because I think the rest is simply amazing.

I've re-read my Byrne run the most. Too bad he left before properly finishing his stories.

I love the Stan & Jack FF as some of my most favorite superhero comics.

Just because books from yesteryear aren't told in the same style as they are today, does not mean they weren't well executed. Most were - and Byrne's FF stood tall and proud on that mark.

I love Miller's Daredevil, Simonson's Thor, and Claremont on X-Men (and loads of other people from different times/companies/projects- I love me some silver age shenanigans and early Marvel stuff)- I had to slog my way through those Visionaries trades and only stuck with it as long as I did because everyone's always going on about it. Byrne's writing does nothing for me and since he's ostensibly trying to entertain his audience (me the reader) I don't think it's well executed.

Imagine what it what must have been like reading the Fantastic Four back in 1966...
Inhumans, Silver Surfer, Galactus, the Negative Zone, Black Panther, Klaw, the Golden Age Human Torch and to end the year, how about Doc Doom stealing the Surfer's powers!

Factor in the Kirby/Lee stuff in Thor (Hercules and the Netherworld, the Colonizers, Ego, the Destroyer and the High Evolutionary), Nick Fury (Fixer & Mentallo), and Cap (Sleeper, Cosmic Cube, Super Adaptoid) and 1966 was simply one of the most mind exploding years in comics ever.

Stuff like this had never been seen before!

That... amazes me.

For me the 80's were Miller on DD, Simonson on Thor, Claremont on X-Men, Stern on Spider-Man and Byrne on Fantastic Four.

Two additional things that should also be mentioned about Hickman's run that doesn't happen often, we see some major character advancement, and we have a great new character introduced to us in Bentley.

Bentley fucking rocks.

It's an excellent run. Bit confusing at times.

Just finished the Hickman's FF Trades and "3" leading up to the death of Johnny. All I have to say is wow. This is probably one of the best arcs I've read in a monthly title in a long time.

I can't quite process everything that happened but I cannot wait to read it all again and that doesn't happen very often with comic books anymore.

Johnny's death was perfect, unexpected and ambiguous with no body to confirm or deny but we can only presume he was KIA as it should be with all heroes and villains. I KNOW he's not dead, and I still get choked up thinking about Ben comforting the children outside the Negative Zone portal or the "Final Issue" with no dialogue. The best comic books/animation don't require dialogue, and that issue just broke my heart.

And I STILL KNOW he's not dead!

Great action, superb character development, and profoundly touching. I've never read Waid's FF, but I'd put Hickman in a 3 way tie for Best Ever.

Holland Oats wrote:It's in October, actually, my bad.

Fantastic Four #611 and FF #23 will be the last Hickman issues.

Ah well, at least I clued in before it was all over, better late than never.

Any idea what Hickman is going to work on next?
Proof is imminent...

Nope. Pretty much all of Marvel's top writers are off their books in the fall, and they haven't said what they'll be on..

Hickman off F4/FF, and The Ultimates.
Bendis off both Avengers.
Aaron off Wolverine.

There's gonna be some shakeups this fall, that's for sure.

#606 came out this week. Is it the first time that an issue has just been about the core four members? Regardless, it's another example of Hickman mushing together sci fi and family stuff just like a proper FF story and everything.
