In a press release today, IDW virtually sat readers down in front of a slide projector and forced them to look at photos from their trip to the Grand Canyon.

Press releases from comic book companies often convey information that might not necessarily be considered newsworthy, but IDW took this concept to another level today when they sent out a press release that reads like the long-winded Christmas card your aunt sends out every year updating you on what each of her cats has been up to for the last twelve months. Amongst the droning on about stuff that's already been covered in separate news stories where appropriate over the past few months, IDW did announce that editor Sarah Gaydos has joined the company. We guess IDW didn't feel Gaydos warranted her own entire press release, despite her stellar credentials, and so they decided to pad it with a bunch of other stats and bragging about their 7.5% share of the direct market. They don't start talking about Gaydos until the end of the second paragraph. What a great way to begin a relationship!
Here's the press release:
IDW Continues to Grow!
Editor Sarah Gaydos Joins as New Projects are Announced
San Diego, CA (May 6, 2013) – Though it’s not yet halfway over, 2013 has already been a banner year for IDW Publishing. In addition to the announcements of a slew of new projects over the last few months, America’s fourth-largest comics publisher is also continuing to expand as the beloved Artist’s Edition line joins Yoe Books and The Library of American Comics as its own imprint. IDW has also seen huge success with the IDW Limited line and announced at C2E2 2013 their status as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s newest Corporate Member.
“April’s numbers show that IDW accounted for 7.5% of the market share in the direct market,” said Publisher and CEO Ted Adams. “That’s the highest percentage we’ve reached as a company so far and we’re looking forward to trying to beat it. We’ve got a dedicated staff and an exciting slate of books on our side, so we’re excited to welcome a strong new Editor in Sarah Gaydos and continue growing even more.”
Gaydos is an industry veteran, having spent six years at WildStorm and DC Comics working on titles like Batman: Li’l Gotham, Django Unchained, Young Justice, and Smallville, among many others.
“We’re very pleased Sarah’s joining the team,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “Sarah is gonna hit the ground running and work on both big, established properties as well as develop new projects, and I know that her work experience and positive attitude will benefit those titles and the company as a whole, too.”
"I'm very excited to join the IDW team! Working at WildStorm studios in La Jolla was the best comics education anyone could ask for,” said Gaydos. “I learned from some of the best editors around, and was able to run down the hall to watch top artists and production artists hard at work. I'm grateful for the time I spent there, and am absolutely looking forward to using these skills at IDW in my new position as Editor. I'm eager to work with awesome talent on exceptional titles."
With an expanding Editorial department comes an expanding slate of titles. Over the last few months, IDW has announced exciting titles like LOCKE & KEY: ALPHA, BLACK DYNAMITE, ROCKY & BULLWINKLE, MR. PEABODY AND SHERMAN, STAR TREK: AFTER DARKNESS, POWERPUFF GIRLS, SAMURAI JACK, and many, many more.
It’s a good time to be a comics reader as titles for every conceivable fan hit the shelves, and IDW is proud to be leading the charge and making sure no reader goes comic-less!
