Review:
Hmmm... it figures I'd have to review a book on mixed martial arts after having just watch one of my MMA heroes, the legendary B.J. Penn, get thumped by one of my other all-time favorite MMA fighters, Nick Diaz. It figures, and it's a bit of a fight to read someone else's struggle while the bitter taste of legends laid waste still sits on my tongue. If nothing else, Image Comics'
Heart delivers a nice, competent, good start to introducing the MMA world to another world that has had to fight for its chance to shine: the world of comics!!
Writer Blair Butler takes us on a young MMA fighter's journey into the world of MMA and cage fighting. The reader sees through the eyes of a young gun, Oren "Rooster" Redmon, as he steps away from the office chair, sheds the beer weight and steps onto the fight path of rigorous training regiments and multiple nearby puke buckets. (Shouldn't have eaten those Hot Pockets before training, Oren.) Simultaneously Oren and the reader both find that it takes a certain kind of person - driven, maybe a bit crazy - to want to get punched in the face or have an arm snapped off. With the grit and guts, though, comes the glory, as not only peers but also the ladies pay more attention to you, and you're the one in the comics being read about instead of the one sitting on the toilet weeping while you... errr... read!
Heart is a good start for MMA comics, and with high-quality artwork by Kevin Mellon, who actually knows how to draw what a triangle choke looks like, readers and MMA fans alike can step into the crossover world of MMA comics and burn a few calories while they read the hard fought trials and travels of today's modern day gladiators, the real Batmans and Daredevils.
