I was just discussing this with a friend of mine.... and I think it's time we all admit it.

Frank Castle, The Punisher, may be bad ass, and may be hardcore.... but let's face it.

He's also possibly the most successful (in terms of sheer number of bodies) SERIAL KILLER in American History. :D

Yah no shit. That's why everyone loves him. He's the hard-cock of all anti-heroes.

He's that Showtime TV character, Dexter.

He's a serial murderer, and a villain. But, cause the people he kills are only criminals, he gets a pass.

That's why I never liked him that much, except for Garth Ennis' stuff. :)

I remember someone (maybe Ennis, maybe Mike Baron) making the same point in an interview. It sounds right to me, and that's why I prefer him as a "villain" in other characters' titles then off on his own.

I think your right, but I still say he's a closet case.

Ben Kingsley's character from Suspect Zero was like that, too.

Yep. One thing is I always had a problem with him mixing with other heroes. I have no problem if he's the "villain" but he's also, in his own little way, doing some good so I think of him as being a neccessary evil and it seems as if writers don't grasp that.

That's kind of why I've always hated the character. Murder is never something to be celebrated.

Depends though. One, he only kills those who probably already have killed and aren't innocent and, secondly, one can make the claim he's killing so someone else, who may be less experienced, more insane, or have other problems, isn't.

I like any book that doesn't glamourise him, and Ennis' MAX run has far from done that. Frank knows he's a broken hollow man with nothing left in him but hate, and we've had around 60 issues of him coming to turns with that and pointing his inhumanity at those who he thinks deserve it. It's fun in the same way as Se7en or Alien 3, in that it's joyless and bleak.
