yeah, you've got Sand & Stars, the JSA "Talking With David", the trip to Hell, the Mist spotlight issue, Infernal Devices, the Batman/Sentinel/Jack team-up, and the Christmas Knight story coming up within the next two trades. if you haven't caught on to and fully embraced the wonder by then, you're just dead inside. :P ;-)

Actually, I just signed on a few minutes ago to tell you that I read the next two trades today. (Thanks again, Melon!)

And yes, I was coming to say.... I'm still not 100% sold on it. BUT... that Christmas Knight story, I must admit, was one of the best single issues I've read in a LONG LONG while....

Oh, don't get me wrong, I was never saying it wasn't FUN.... just that I don't think it's the most brilliant thing ever written. In fact, much of the writing so far feels like it's striving TOO hard. Not the plot, or the dialogue, but a LOT of the narration feels (to me at least) like it's trying to put on airs.

I do love the Xmas story, and I really like the "Talking with David" stuff, which feels very SANDMAN-ish to me. In fact, so far I vastly, VASTLY enjoy the single issue character pieces more than the actual action stories. Outside the Xmas issue, I think the best one yet is this issue in the TIMES PAST trade, vol. 4, which features two different simultaneous discussions: Ted talking about Jack with a woman dating Jack, and Jack talking about Ted with his tattoo artist.

I think another hurdle I have here is, Jack Knight really isn't a very likable character, to me. I'm far more interested in the Shade, Matt O'Dare, Ted Knight, and the people AROUND Jack, frankly....

In fact, so far, TIMES PAST is my favorite volume. :)

trust me, Jack grows on you (as he grows up, basically). i agree...the reason i didn't catch on to the book until it came out in trades was b/c i thought the same way about him that you do. not my kind of character. but that's the joy of the book...watching him become that kind of guy.

and the action stories get better and better as they go. all the space stuff and Grand Guignol (which you haven't gotten to yet) are truly terrific.

Well, as I said. It's got me enough that I'm planning to stick around for the long haul. And frankly, if I'm comparing it to Sandman, that bodes well for it.

But I reserve the right to say, if the writing doesn't get less heavy handed, I will never acknowledge the brilliance of Robinson. ;)

My favorite character in Starman wasn't Jack(who's awesome) Shade(who's awesome) Michael(awesome) Ted(awesome) or Bobo(whose cool). It's Matt O'Dare. I loved his arc.

Yeah the whole O'Dare family were great. I'd love to read a mini series about them.

How many omnibuses are there? I thought there'd be one big book, but I see there's 2 out, and another 3 or so coming.

There's going to be 6 books collecting the whole run, including stuff not in the regular trades. So far only one has come out and the wait for #2 is killing me.
