Justice League Dark #9 - Lemire's First Issue (Spoilers)

Postby Stephen Day » Sun May 27, 2012 3:58 pm

First off, I have to say that while I enjoyed the first eight issues of Justice League Dark, this first issue with Jeff Lemire as writer seemed to be so much better. I think I'm going to enjoy Lemire run on this book. :)

Having the team get together under the auspices of Steve Trevor and A.R.G.U.S. seems to be a stronger reason than the team has had to be together up to now. I'm assuming that Trevor is going to offer other deals such as the one he offered to Constantine this issue as the reason why they get together for other missions. It was also nice to see the name on the cover finally used this issue. It was a nice touch to have Trevor mention that it's the nickname that A.R.G.U.S. has for them.

As for the story itself, I've always like Felix Faust and the new cult and creatures he controls are fairly horrific. That combined with the power up from his new found toy and he comes across as a real threat now. Speaking of that toy, I'm intrigued, the name the Map to the Books of Magic suggests some things. Could it include a possible appearance by Tim Hunter maybe?

Thank you Troy for the sig

Lemire's other DC books have been largely hit/miss for me but I really liked this, and that last page reveal presents a WHOLE MESS of possible awesomeness to come.

I really heavily loved this issue.

The tease of what could happen if Z gets her father's hat back was my personal favorite moment in the book as I personally hate the weird canary hybrid costume she has now.

I was ready to drop this book until I heard that Lemire was taking over, so I'm glad to hear it was worth persevering. Milligan's run was entirely awful.

What's the lineup now? I'm not as big on Lemire as some people, but I could be convinced into giving it a look. I'm not a Milligan guy by any stretch, so I hadn't picked it up.

i don't like Lemire at all, but i will happily admit this was the single best issue of any book with "Justice League" in the title since the DCnU relaunch. not that that's saying much, but still...

lineup looks like:
Andrew Bennett
Constantine
Black Orchid
Deadman
Zatanna
and maybe Madame Xanadu, although she's being iffy

Huh. I can get down with Deadman, Constantine and Zatanna, if you're telling me the premise is solid.

I'm not a huge fan of "The Magic Justice League" approach, but again, with DC, I do recognize they're still trying to figure out what's going to sell.

I may give this a tumble, but I'm currently trudging through the JLD/I, Vampire crossover, and the drag comes from the Justice League Dark side of it. Really, really not my cup.

Deadman, Constantine and Zatanna are the "core" group, everyone else will come and go as needed.

I liked Black Orchid. She seems like a handy character to have around.

Yeah, but her name immediately makes 7 year old me think of Killer Instinct.

Anyone else remember that game?

Yup. But, as Sitebreaker says, DC's first Black Orchid character predates KI by a few decades.
