Marvel revealed what the "The First X-Men"
tease from last week was all about... more Wolverine! Oh, and some other mutants from before Xavier's first class.
Writer and artist Neal Adams and scripter Christos Gage joined editor Nick Lowe today to talk about the 5-issue mini series due out in August.
Adams thought that Lee and Kirby's X-Men seemed like the middle of the story and not the beginning and proposed that a mutant superteam was around before Professor X and his school for gifted children.
"Of all the mutants on Earth, Professor X could easily pass as a human. Why would he want to get involved in this? Maybe all this was going on before Professor X was Professor X...when Professor X was a teenager. Maybe mutant kids were getting abused by the military, by the government. Somebody would have been looking out for them, but maybe that person came to Charles Xavier, realizing he couldn't protect these kids. That was my pitch."
It doesn't seem like Xavier was quite ready to open his school at this point. So what's a mercenary to do with all of his money? Round up a team sounds like a good idea.
So who will appear in this title? It seems any new mutant title these days must include Wolverine, so that's a given. A certain Nazi-hunting mutant named Erick Lensherr will also join the cast. Also shown on the cover are Sabretooth, a new character named Bombastic Aghast (aka. Bomb), and an unidentified female character.
An appearance by an amnesiac-striken mutant (referred to as "Hobo Sub-Mariner") was also teased. Also, an earlier version of the Sentinels will be shown.
The series will be set in-continuity and promises to answer questions that have been around for decades.
