I'm Not Racist But...: Why Robin Shouldn't Be Black

No, really, it has nothing to do with race.

Source: MURPHY SHARES FIRST LOOK AT "DETECTIVE COMICS'" BLACK ROBIN

Comic Book Resources reported on a tweet sent out by Detective Comics #27 artist, (and friend of the site) Sean Murphy that, seemingly, showcased a new, black, Robin.

Now, I’m not a racist, but there is no way anyone will accept an African American Robin because…

No, wait, let me start over

Not to come off as racist, but a black Robin will never succeed because…

No, dammit!

It’s not because sidekicks can’t be black, just look at….um, well….

Much like it is perfectly reasonable for an Asian to hang out with a bunch of Asgardians with no explanation but Heimdall shouldn’t have been black, my arguments against a black robin has nothing to do with him being black…

That’s the worst one yet!

Fuck, there really is no way to argue that Robin can’t be black without sounding like a complete tool, is there?

Detective Comics #27 is an oversized anniversary issue that beings the next Bat crossover, Gothtopia, and it is where you can find the first appearance of this new Robin…who happens to be black.

Another crossover event. Because THAT'S what we need.

Guh...bet this'll delay the conclusion of the current Batgirl storyline, too.

Anyway, new black Robin, whatever. We'll see how he is as a character and go from there.

I am assuming this will be a brand new character with his own spin on the Robin mythos so what color he is doesn't bother me at all.

After 2 years of a half-black, half Latino Ultimate Spider-Man and the upcoming Arab American Miss Marvel... a black Robin as a supporting character in a "What If?" style book doesn't strike me as particularly newsworthy.

I'll keep an eye out for "Gothtopia". I like most of Layman's Batman work, so this might be interesting.

So...robin can't be a girl, but he can be black? is that what they are saying?
here is MY problem with it...it comes off as bruce wayne being this "all mighty whitey" that takes this kid from the street and takes over the charge of raising him!
to have a black character sidekick is especially tricky for a rich guy like Batman because it is very easy that the black character does not become a character, but a thing to have to make the white guy have the spotligh, it is HIS struggle to raise the kid, it is HE who is the hero of the story about the blck kid, and tha'ts racist in itself.

I'm not certain on a Robin being black, I'd much rather she was Brown.

"Batgirl: Wanted" ends in next month's #26. "Gothtopia" begins with issue #27.

well said,

what i don't like is casting or reinventing a previous character with a different nationality for no reason. If you want to make a black Robin that's cool, just don't start calling him Dick Grayson or Tim Drake

I actually do have a problem with this. The Batman-Robin relationship has always been iffy and people love making jokes about them being gay and/or Batman being a pedophile. At least with a Batman and Robin that are the same skin color (and even better if they look like), you can claim that they're related and it's less weird.

At the same time, I'm all for a white Captain America and a black Bucky.

I always thought of Falcon as the black Bucky.

Bring it.

Dick is now Nightwing.
Jason is now The Red Hood.
Tim is now Red Robin.
Stephanie is now... I don't know? :smt102
Damien is dead... unless the Lazerous pit brings him back.

As I said with Ms Marvel, lets see him and then judge. After all, they didn't kack Damien just to make Robin black... right?
"Why are you pointing your screwdrivers like that? They're scientific instruments, not water pistols."
"Oh, the pointing again! They're screwdrivers! What are you going to do? Assemble a cabinet at them?"
"Are you capable of speaking without flapping your hands about?"
""Timey" what? "Timey wimey"?"
