Plagiarism Conspiracy Surrounds Stan Lee's The Guardian Project and ImagiNation Sports (UPDATED)

Postby LOLtron » Mon Feb 14, 2011 11:17 am

Plagiarism Conspiracy Surrounds Stan Lee's The Guardian Project and ImagiNation Sports (UPDATED)An anonymous whistleblower or whistleblowing group is accusing Guardian Media, the company behind The Guardian Project, of plagiarism.

This morning, we received a series of emails in our press inbox from an anonymous source calling himself "Truth Teller" filled with accusations about The Guardian Project, a joint venture between the NHL, Guardian Media, and Stan Lee to create 30 superheroes based on franchises in the NHL. The allegations state that the concepts and characters behind the Guardian Project are taken from a company called ImagiNation Sports, Inc. and their 3010 property.

Whether there is any truth behind the allegations, this reporter can make no judgments, but in the interest of open reporting, the events are depicted below exactly as they have occurred thus far:

The first email, sent to various comic book news sources, contained three images (published below) and simply said:
Spider Man Creator Stan Lee, the NHL, and Guardian Media plagiarized Guardian Project 30 characters concepts, story, business and marketing plans from Detroit based creative group ImagiNation Sports, Inc.

Another email was sent shortly thereafter containing a link to a Youtube video (embedded below) and another short message:
Link shows the original promotional trailer for 3010, a sci-fi property that catapults sports 1000 years into the future. Stan Lee, the NHL, and Guardian Media stole the business model. story concepts, and character designs from a small black business group in Detroit to develop the Guardian Project 30.

It's too early and too little information has been revealed to make judgements yet, but in the interest of open discussion, the arguments of the whistleblower/s are presented below so that readers may decide for themselves. The whistleblower/s has promised to continue to release more evidence until the matter is settled.

UPDATE: For your further reading pleasure, I worked with a colleague here at The Outhouse to investigate ImagiNation Sports, Inc. on the web, and this is what he uncovered:

http://imagination-edutainment.net/game.html

http://twitter.com/monstaflysho

http://imagination-edutainment.net/news5.html

And his take on the subject?

I don't see much sign of credibility here, frankly, or any other place this would be referenced. ImagiNation Sports or whatever has a pretty small presence on the internet, here's what their actual product seems to be, Baseball3010, a crappy looking video game proposal involving sports-playing "Xenotrons". I would have to look more closely at Stan's NHL character designs to see if they're remotely similar at all, but they are sports uniforms so of course they will have some similarities..

Also, you and I are the only other 2 people to watch the youtube, I think.

Still checking, but this sounds like bunkum.

So what do you think, readers? Laughable, or serious? Right now, we're leaning toward laughable.

Why would anyone, Stan Lee included, want to take credit for The Guardian Project? It was really stupid.
The witness said Mr Brown then called out to Ms Hay's adult daughter: "Look at this, I'm tittie-f***ing your mother!".

Based solely on this evidence, the allegations look pretty thin. The similarities between the two characters mentioned in the article are pretty vague: there are an awful lot of superheroes with a purple, black, and silver color scheme, and the studded armor isn't exactly original either. The characters otherwise don't look at all alike. Their powers aren't similar at all either: digging into the ground is not the same as causing earthquakes.

I tried to find the image that someone made showing that Nova had the "pyramid of three faces" years earlier, but it looks like that image is gone.
