Im not "shocked" that people are offended by the concept, only annoyed. Characters die in literature all the time, characters we grow to like. Having Romeo and Juliet die at the end of the story doesn't make it "terrible" or "offensive", its just that social networking and tumblr has elevated "fandom" into weird, juvenile, cultish groups who obsess over characters so much that when they die, it becomes a huge ordeal.
that was one play, not a serial and completely different and it was called a tragedy for a reason
when Doyle killed of Sherlock Holmes the reason he brought him back was pressure from the fans. Letters to him, his publishers, etc
and you're right, having then die didn't make the play terrible
the play does that all on its own
