Review: DRONES #1 & 2

What do goats, terror-porn, and Predator drones have in common? I'm still not entirely sure...

DRONES #1 and #2 (Chris Lewis, Bruno Oliveira, Cabral, E.T. Dollman, Jon Hogan)

Published by Epigamics

You’ve gotta love any time that something new and unique hits your desk. If one thing is a constant in the world of comics, it is that almost everything has been done in one form or another… and that Rule 34 probably applies somewhere.  However, today I review the first two issues of DRONES. Let me first preface this by saying that there are goats of a sexual nature. I’d like you to take a second or five to roll that around in your head.  Also, take note that there are depictions of the 70-whatever virgins that are available for all hard-working terrorists that die in the line of duty.  Only they’re a bit creepy. That being said….

DRONES revolves around a duo of remote Predator drone operators (unmanned spy units, usually used for surveillance and making parking lots out of hostile territory). Mike “Stinger” Watson, and Lani “Angel Eyes” Parvati are the two protagonists (I guess?) in question, who also happen to be shagging like bunnies in their spare time.  That notwithstanding, they are tasked with the elimination of a terrorist, and also his goat. At least I think that they are supposed to kill the goat. Perhaps the goat is symbolism, possibly for blowing up livestock, or even fornicating with it. You can’t be too sure of these things.  This all leads into a rather unique ride full of sex, casinos full of fake/real terrorists, harems, pancakes, and… another goat.  Which leads into what I believe to be ninja assassin hookers, and acrobatics of an absurd and clumsy nature. Did you know that there was a sub-genre of entertainment labeled as terror-porn? Well, according to this marvelous piece of art, there is.

After reading these first two issues about 4 times apiece, I can’t help but look forward to reading further into this chaotic, all-day train wreck of a comic. It is beautiful in its discord. The writing keeps you on your toes, and there are definitely details that you pick up the more you reread it. I highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys a more adult oriented romp.  The artwork is very fitting, almost lending a whimsical, chaotic feel to the books. Now, that being said, keep in mind that I love stories like Preacher and the like. If you do not want to have something that will engage you, and make you read it again to be able to take in things, this book is NOT FOR YOU. But that’s ok. That’s why stuff like Avengers Vs. X-Men exists in this world. I’m not even going to bother rating anything in particular with DRONES, because the feel is quite different than most things out there.  If you’re looking for something fresh, you owe it to yourself to at least give it a shot.

Get the first issue for $.99 at iBooks, Graphicly, or DriveThru. For more information, visit the Epigamics website here.

So I got to read this book as well, and wow! It is a real mindfuck of a comic.

Reminds me a lot of Casanova. Discerning readers should definitely check this out.

Also, the Matt Fraction of the first two volumes of Casanova is great. Matt Fraction post-Invincible Iron Man 24 is a different story...

I'm really looking forward to reading more of this. I was very happily surprised with them :)
