Finally got a chance to snag the home computer for a moment.

Ahem....

Going into Uncanny Avengers #1, I was hoping for a comic that'd make the series a must-buy right from the gate. After reading the issue, Uncanny Avengers isn't at that point yet. Some of the writing lacks some extra oomph to it. It's not bad, but it needs something to pop it up. Thankfully, Remender sprinkles some cool stuff that gets the imagination running. John Cassaday and Laura Martin handle the art and the result is cool, though occasionally odd product. At best, Cassaday turns in some high quality art that reminds me of his Astonishing X-Men days; at worst, it looks a little off in places. All that being said, I'm game for the next issue. The ending opens the door to a badass story and my faith in Remender is solid.

Having not read Avengers vs X-Men, I have to say that going into this series I was a little worried that I might be lost. That wasn't the case though, Rick Remender did a good job of hitting the important plot points from that series and making them clear for somebody like me that hadn't read it.

As for the story this issue itself, it's a good start; it's not the best first issue ever, but it's good. My preference is first issues that have self contained stories and for team books that have the team formed with the first issue. However, these days, those first issues are the exception rather than the rule and I realize that. Having said that, when reviewing something I can't completely disregard my own biases, even if I recognize them.

When it comes to the story's key points, the grief over Prof. X's loss was clear, as were Captain America's reason for forming this particular team of Avengers. The final page was also shocking -- in a very good way. There was only one problem I had with this issue, and it's a pet peeve of mine when it comes to the way that today's comics are written in general. That problem is that there was no proper introduction to the villain's this issue. They showed up, the Goat Faced Girl became the only one who we now the name of, and then there were no more names given for the rest of the team. It's always seemed like lazy writing to me to not let the reader who this most basic fact about a character.

In the end, despite this pet peeve, the writing was strong overall. The events and the characters motivations within them are clear, interesting and fun to read.

7 out of 10. It's not a higher score because the problems I had may be minor individually, but they added up together to somewhat hurt my enjoyment.

With all due respect, this is the most absurd statement I've read in quite some time. Taste is, obviously, subjective, but "worst comic ever" already has dozens in the running that are 100 times worse than this. Unless it's a dry sarcastic humor you're going for...but based on your love of Magnetclops (or is it Cyneto), I'm assuming that's not the case.
