Fact - I'm not a fan of what Hickman did with his time in the FF's universe.
Fact - I love the Fantastic Four. FF #160 was my first ever comic book and I've looked forward to checking out the titles again now that the aforementioned Hickman was gone.
Fact - I'm not a fan of the Future Foundation kids. Nothing against them personally (with the exception of Valerie whom I despise) but the concept just never grabbed me.

After reading the latest Fantastic Four #1, I can say I'm in for the short and possible long run. #1 was pretty solid and as long as the focus is on the team and not individual members, I'll be around. This issue surprisingly had me anxious for FF #1 as I love Medusa, Ant-Man and Shulkie and the weirdness of them being on a team together does interest me. When first announced I wasn't thrilled with fuchsia hair girl Thing and hoped that once I read the book I'd change my mind on her. That and little to no mention of the kids spurred me on.

And then I read FF #1.

The book opens with Franklin and Valerie ( :smt011

the one character I didn't want to see). At least with her going to the main FF title, she'll be gone from this book and maybe I'll discover a reason to like the other kids. We'll see.

Anyway, Fraction crafted the book nicely having it end basically where it begins with interspersed responses mixed with earlier recruiting scenes. Some nice touches are remembering that Medusa has a child and having Scott deal with the loss of his own. Characters felt a bit like they should with one notable exception where Reed fails to be able to discuss Scott's loss (when reading that panel I couldn't help wonder if Fraction ever read FF #267 where Reed is said to be quite the psychologist with his words.)

The book reads well and the art is typical Allred fun, but (there had to be one) if there's a problem it's with his Thing. It's a cross between a Kirby/Coletta Thing and the Thing from the old 1977 coloring books.

I'm not impressed with his depiction of Ben (and that he hasn't figured out how many fingers and toes Ben has yet is just poor draftmanship). And another quick mention on the poor choice of name tags. very distracting. There's an awful lot of meaningless or empty backgrounds too.

Some faults I find with aspects of this issue story...
Sue can walk on floating force field discs? What holds them up? Don't know if this was Fraction or Allred concept but it just doesn't work.
Shouldn't Leech cancel out Artie's power? (this may have an explanation that I missed due to my aforementioned dislike of the Hickman era).
Who the hell is Darla Deerling and why should I care? Some bink that Johnny's is boinking is more qualified than Alex Powers? (or Spider-Man or any of a hundred other heroes that the FF could have called on?)

As stated in my Fantastic Four #1 post, I'm curious where Fraction is taking this 'my powers are killing me/us' bit. Seems odd that for 50+ years that this would happen now (especially when each member has at one time or twelve, lost their powers before. As long as this is not a return to JMS 'intelligent' cosmic rays lunacy, I'll keep an open mind.

I'm in for the next issue if for no other reason than to see how they play out the whole "four minutes" thing. I'll assume they don't come back as planned which forces the new team to adventure together, so does the Earth team consider the main team as dead?

This issue was more or less an intro to the concept of this series. It wasn't the best issue at doing this I've ever read. but it was also far from the worst. It was a fun read, but as a single issue there wasn't much of a story to it.

I like all of the Future Foundation kids and the new team of FF replacements, although I'm still not sure about Miss Thing. The best scene this issue dealt with Scott Lang and Reed Richards. Lang being torn between wanting to help Reed and not wanting to deal with kids so soon after his own daughter's death was very well written. The only scene I didn't like was The Johnny Storm/Darla Deering bedroom scene. Johnny has been portrayed as an immature character at times, but in this scene he seemed almost stupid. It didn't seem to be consistent with his past portrayals.

I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes from here -- 6 out of 10.
