This week's pick:

All-New Ghost Rider #1

Image

Who is this new Ghost Rider? And how did he come to possessed with such awesome power? The answers will be revealed when the explosive ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER #1 sets comic shops ablaze this March!

Digital copy can be found here.

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

Ghost Rider #1

I haven't cared for GR for decades but I looked at this book on the shelves and I thought I'd give it a quick read for this thread.

Good kid, works hard, lives in a bad neighborhood, takes care of handicapped little brother all by himself, runs into a street gang, drag races at night to buy more wheelchairs for said invalid brother, gets caught and 'killed' not for street racing but for the mystery stuff he didn't know was in the trunk and lastly ugly Rider possesses his dying body. Continued next issue.

As stated, I thought I would just give this issue a quick scan, instead I gave it a thorough read!

Which isn't quite what it sounds like because a thorough read takes about 3 minutes. There's very little 'reading' to this book. Thankfully the art tells more of the story that the words do .

I've never heard of either the writer or artist before. It doesn't feel like 'writing', it feels like 'plotting disguised as writing'. The art is a different matter. It's cartoony but still with a sense of purpose. Characters are mostly deformed but damn if they don't feel alive, even just standing in place. I just wrote a post on Silver Surfer #1 and where Surfer's action scenes are drawn like little plastic figures from the 50's, this book's action is positively exploding with fluid movements. And also (unlike Allred) the detail to the backgrounds is much appreciated. Tradd Moore is the best thing about this book - no doubt.

Unfortunately, there's little else that made me want to actually purchase the book, let alone even glance at #2.

Story - 2
Art - 7
Overall - 4.5

Have you had a chance to read the Luther Strode comics from Image? That's where Tradd Moore first on everyone's radar before this series.

The art is very cartoony, but that seems to be more of a stylistic choice and, (IMO at least) it works for this issue. Unlike DC (whose ideas on "diversity" seem... skewed, at best) and following in the steps of the new Captain Marvel and Miles Morales, this new Ghost Rider is not (at the moment, at least) actively replacing their namesake but adding to the history of the role.

The main character is likeable, makes good choices and you want to see him succeed. You can understand why he makes the choices he makes. Unlike other Marvel #1 issues (except the aforementioned Captain Marvel), this is not a done-in-one issue and the origin story continues next issue.

While I enjoyed the issue, I won't be heartbroken if, for some reason, I can't get my hands on the next one. But I AM planning to pick up the next issue, though.

Young Mr. Reyes is going to be an interesting character to read about. This first issue did a good job of establishing that he is a decent guy. He makes some bad choices, but overall it's clear that he is a good person. This all makes me want to see what will happen to him.

So the writing was fairly solid I'd say, and so was the artwork. It's very stylized, but was also exciting to look at. The car race scenes just screamed action.

I've stated it before that I always prefer first issues that are standalone. This is still the truth and I will admit that one of the huge problems I had here was that the transformation into Ghost Rider didn't happen until the end. Having said that, the biggest job a first issue has is to get the reader interested in continuing past that first issue. In the end, this issue succeeded in that mission when it comes to me.

It's not the best first issue I've ever read, but it did what it needed to do.

6 out of 10
