The Punisher #7

Image

• The international best-selling author of NOT A GOOD DAY TO DIE, KEVIN MAURER joins Nathan Edmondson to tell a story of Punisher in jungle warfare!

• A group of American soldiers are being held prisoner by a South American drug lord, and suddenly a new prisoner arrives…Frank Castle!

• But not all is as it seems on EITHER side of the bars in this jail tale!

Digital copy can be found here.

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

This issue takes place in southern Mexico. The plot revolves around the Punisher's escape from the compound of a criminal who has captured him and is intending to sell him to the highest bidder. The main villain, Mr. Ortiz, AKA El Diablito, a name he hates, is a well formed villain. You know what he wants and why, he wants the money he can get from selling the Punisher to another villain, to do whatever he or she wants with him. It's not major motivation, but it's effective in this story that is similarly not that complicated. The thing is, you don't always need a complicated plot to have a good story, and this is something this story proves.

This book is Hollywood!

I haven't read a Punisher book in ages, but right from the start it felt like a Stallone, Arnold or Gibson movie where the hero is on death's door one minute than makes a daring escape killing hundreds along the way. That's what this book delivered.

Unfortunately, I can't stand any of those actors and that goes double for Frank Castle.

All the dominoes that were needed to escape had to fall in exactly the right order - and the writer made sure they did...

Hero miraculously recovers from a near fatal wound in just a couple days - check
The bad guy cannot even conceive the possibility that Castle could escape - check
During the hero's torture (which coincided with his recovery), the bad guys never consider really injuring Castle - check
The bad guys throw Castle in a cell with a fellow captured American - check
The bad guys never bothered to search Castle for weapons or tools - check
As the shooting starts, the main bad guy doesn't think it's an escape, just over-zealous henchmen - check
Castle and friend escape a compound of a hundred plus men (all of whom never once practiced at a target range) - check

All in all, it was the worst kind of Hollywood straight to video comic I've read in a long while.

I want my 5 minutes back.

Story - 1
Art - 5
Overall - 3

I think this is where we differed, I love those movies and get a real kick out of them.

I didn't pick this up last week. I loved Punisher when I was a kid, but these days I tend to think that just about everything that can be done with a character like this to make him interesting was done with Ennis' MAX run.

I know it makes for a different movie/comic but if I had Frank Castle/Rambo/John Matrix/Riggs/etc. as my prisoner, I'd strip him (finding his lockpicks and his other McGuvyer stuff). Then I'd shoot his knee caps so, even if he could escape, he'd have to painfully crawl. Or if the person I was selling him to would object to that - I'd at minimum break or chop his frickin' tgrigger fingers off! Those drug kingpin guys always get it in the end - not because they're the bad guy, but because they're so stupid when it comes to their prisoners.

I'm just tired of the cliche - which this Punisher comic reveled in.

Whereas I see those things as more along the lines of conventions and not outright cliches. The genre this issue was reveling in wouldn't exist without them. Well, it could I guess, but I don't think I'd see stories in that genre as anywhere near as fun to watch or read.

Anyone know what's happened to GLX? His UCP says that he hasn't logged in since Monday.

No, that's probably why there's already two Superman #32 threads
