“THE MAN OF TOMORROW” chapter 1! A NEW ERA for SUPERMAN begins as Geoff Johns takes the reigns – and he’s joined by the legendary super-talent of John Romita, Jr. in his first-ever work for DC Comics as they introduce Ulysses, the Man of Tomorrow, into the Man of Steel’s life. This strange visitor shares many of Kal-El’s experiences, including having been rocketed from a world with no future. Prepare yourself for a run full of new heroes, new villains and new mysteries! Plus, Perry White offers Clark a chance to return to The Daily Planet!
This issue is also offered as a combo pack edition with a redemption code for a digital download of this issue.

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

I won't be able to participate right on time for this one. Money is a little tight this week due to a couple of nasty surprises and I couldn't get any extra copies if anything this week. I might be able to get a copy of this next week and I'll review it then if I can.

I'd throw more judgment your way if I didn't know that kind of situation more often. For now, at least pick next week's comic. :P

Copies & pasted from the other thread...

First off, I loved that this was #32 and not a forced renumbering to get #1 sales.
Secondly - this was a strong start for the creative team (and I'll echo the compliment for the coloring, really good).

Bringing the Planet staff more into the picture is a good move as I enjoy Clark interacting with normal people more than I do when Kal does.

While the Ulysses origin is derivative, Ulysses thinking Earth was destroyed was a nice twist and I look forward to seeing the not-alien try to fit in with his birth home (as opposed to all the Superman trying to fit in stories we've had).

Johns was typical Johns, and he did not disappoint and while I stopped being a JRJR fan a long time back, having Jansen on inks made it look good.

Story - 7
Art - 7
Overall - 7

I've never really been a big fan of Superman as a character and have never bough anything with his name stamped on the front outside of Unchained, because I always figured they couldn't possibly be very interesting given he's basically a god. These days I've sort of come to grips with the fact that even human superheroes are immortal gods too, so why not give a Superman title a shot. At least it kinda makes sense in the context of the character!

I've read very little Johns, mostly some of his early Green Lantern stuff, and I'm not overly familiar with JRJR either, outside of the infamous Fury/Stark panel. I found JRJR's stuff here to be serviceable superhero stuff - probably didn't help his cause that I finished a couple of Clayton Crain's Valiant issues right before it. Some of the best looking interiors I've seen in big name books lately would be Crain, Opena, and Capullo, and JRJR is not of that standard.

As for Johns' plot, the similarities to Unchained have been pointed out by everybody and they are indeed a bit striking, but it really does feel like I just jumped in on the ground floor of the beginning of a whole new direction for a character. It seems Johns is DC's revivalist specialist, and that they insert into a book to generate some buzz and get people back onboard. It's a promising start here, and I'm glad this book was chosen for the review group or else I probably would've passed.

7.5/10

Legendary Star-Lord #1

Spinning directly out of the pages of Guardians of the Galaxy and just in time for the highly anticipated summer blockbuster – the notorious interstellar outlaw is striking out to swindle and swashbuckle his way across the galaxy in search of big adventures and even bigger scores. Expect a battle with the Badoon, a fight to save an orphanage, not to mention a little flirting with Kitty Pryde of the X-Men – and that’s just the FIRST ISSUE!

From the cold abyss of deep space to the seedy alien underworld, deadly forces await around every turn – and the Star-Lord stands alone. As the brazen outlaw prepares to strike out on a new journey, no fan can afford to miss the continuing adventures of the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. An epic new adventure begins right here – if he lives that long! Hang on dear reader, as Sam Humphries & Paco Medina take you out of this world when THE LEGENDARY STAR-LORD #1 explodes onto comic shop shelves and digital devices this July!

I'm going to repost this here from the other thread as well.

This issue was a lot of fun; plenty of show and not too much tell. It's very much like a cartoon on paper, the sequential art is so fluid. JRjr is given free reign to tell a story with pictures rather than fill panels with portraits so the writer can burden us with text. That's what cartooning is all about and there isn't enough of it in the industry for my liking, especially from the big 2 it seems.

I don't really care about Clark's blogging endeavours so I'm happy to see him back at the Planet. In fact there's a lot about Superman Nu I don't care for, mostly his characterization that I've seen in the Doomed event. It's got a real Bronze Age feel where Superman is wracked with indecision and overly concerned with embracing mundane behaviour so he doesn't become corrupted by his own power. I hate it when he's written like this and I'm really glad Johns doesn't dwell on this internal dialogue so much.

The new characters are intriguing, even though it's kind of derivative of Unchained but the Planet staff subplots looks promising. I'm looking forward to more from this creative team, I hope they stick around for a while.
