Last week's was the the most popular Review Group thread in recent memory. Despite that, only 2 reviews came out of that. 2.

Let that sink in.

Roche Limit #1

Image

"OUR DESTINY IS THE STARS, AND I WILL LEAD US THERE." Twenty years after this promise, billionaire Langford Skaargard's dream of cosmic exploration is no more. Roche Limit, a colony situated on the cusp of a mysterious energy anomaly, is a melting pot of crime and terrible secrets. When Bekkah Hudson goes missing, the search to find her will plunge her sister and a cadre of the colony's underworld figures into an odyssey that reveals a grim future for mankind. Blending 2001: A Space Odyssey with Blade Runner, ROCHE LIMIT is the first part of a bold sci-fi/noir trilogy.

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

Another book I probably would never have picked up if not for Outhouse, having never heard of any of the creative team prior to picking this up. It's hard to get a good read on exactly what this is going to be about from the first issue as we are teased with a few short, and so-far not entirely related, sci-fi threads poking around the edges of the main thread of the issue, a lady trying to track down her sister on a space colony with the help of a wise-cracking drug dealer.

Moreci's writing - the dialogue in particular - is the highlight of the issue for me, although at times it teeters on the edge of trying to be too clever, but with a first issue the #1 priority really has to be to hook in the reader and bring him back for the second issue so it's understandable. A few panels left me scratching my head, but that was (hopefully) the intention, I'm sure.

The book seemed to be trying to channel Nowhere Men at times, a vibe I picked it up on even before the double-spread biography-styled piece at the end of the issue, but unlike Nowhere Men I'm yet to be introduced to a character that interests me enough to read a fictional interview.

Malhotra's art is OK - I've been spoiled lately as far as sci-fi comic art goes with the likes of Dragotta/Godlewski/Scalera/etc. and Malhotra is certainly not bad or anything, but he lacks their distinct style.

It's a good first issue, and I'll buy #2.

Men of Wrath #1

MATURE READERS

Ever since Great Grandfather Isom killed a man over some sheep, a black cloud has hung over the Rath family. Now, over a century later, Ira Rath, the coldest hitman ever to walk on Alabama soil, has taken a job that will decide the fate of his cursed family once and for all. Writer Jason Aaron (Southern Bastards, Scalped) and artist Ron Garney (Weapon X, Thor: God of Thunder) team up once again, to bring you the story of a Southern family, whose only heirloom is violence.

Nice review. I have not read Nowhere Men, as of yet. Vol 1 is in the pile. From the cover to a few other things, I will save for my review, this is very influenced by Hickman. The back matter works much like the back matter in Watchmen. It is a bit of the history of the world the book is set in and works to tie together some of the disparate threads you mention in the review. The title of the book also speaks to those concerns.

Roche Limit #1

Written by Michael Moreci

Art by Vic Malhotra

Colors by Jordan Boyd

Much is made in the word of creative endeavors about the derivative nature of works. It is most often used as a derogatory declarative. Hell, I called the Penguin in Gotham derivative just this morning. It does not always need to have a negative connotation. Quentin Tarantino would not have a career without all the things he references in his films. While Brubaker and Phillips creator owned work is a bright spot in the field of Comics, it would be disingenuous to discount the influence of Ellroy and Stark, much less the Film Noir they often discuss in their back matter.

There is a difference between a tired cliche and nodding to a book’s influences. Sure, there may not be any more original thought, but you can certainly be creative in the way you package those thoughts. From a glance at the front cover of Roche Limit #1; it is clear that this book wears its influences with pride. That is a Hickmanesque cover if there ever was one. More than any other book I have read, this book directly owes a debt to the way Hickman tells his independent stories. In design and with the computer readout spread of the layout of the colony in which the comic is set, Hickman’s revolutionary style watches over the progression.

However, it isn’t merely Hickman who is being paid the sacrifice of homage. Kubrick is an influence in how the setting becomes a character of itself in this book. There is a nod to Ridley Scott’s singular Alien in the menace portrayed in the introductory pages. The layout of present day Roche Limit reminds one of Blade Runner. The back matter of the book gives a cursory introduction to the history of the setting here, much like Alan Moore did in the seminal Watchmen. This is a book that recognizes where it came from, is in awe of it’s creative gods and pays them due respect.

The writing is solid. Moreci introduces a world filled with mystery well. The narrator appears to be Alex Ford who comes off as a cross between Parker and Harry Dresden. He is a criminal bucking the system with a heart of gold, especially when it comes to the damsel in distress. Who he meets pretty quick. A lady shows up in town looking for her missing sister and both their lives are changed when they meet.

The dialogue is what you would expect from a crime book. Sometimes it is a little hamfisted, but this may be a choice. I think the writer is expressing a level of intelligence (or more exactly, a lack thereof) in some of the characters who may be a little too clever in their verbal sparring.

There is also the title, which is significant. The Roche Limit is the point in space where an object held together by its own gravity will disintegrate upon entering the gravitational pull of another body. This is the physical phenomenon which causes the rings around Saturn. Urban decay is a theme presented in the book and this concept will probably play an important role as an allegory in this book going forward.

Malhotra's art is competent. He does a lot in set design. His line work reminds me of someone like Lemeire but his character design is more like some of the autobiographical stuff that hits on the independent stage. Think Ahmir and Andy or The Burma Chronicles. The colors from Boyd work with the set design to make the art richer than either would be separately. Boyd shows influence from Hollingsworth and some of the other folks that work with Bru and Phillips. He sometimes washes out the background giving it a more monochromatic feel, like those indie books mentioned before.

Roche Limit works as a sum of all the disparate pieces that make it up. It is not groundbreaking or particularly moving, but it is a promising debut.

Overall 7/10
