Men of Wrath #1

MATURE READERS

Ever since Great Grandfather Isom killed a man over some sheep, a black cloud has hung over the Rath family. Now, over a century later, Ira Rath, the coldest hitman ever to walk on Alabama soil, has taken a job that will decide the fate of his cursed family once and for all. Writer Jason Aaron (Southern Bastards, Scalped) and artist Ron Garney (Weapon X, Thor: God of Thunder) team up once again, to bring you the story of a Southern family, whose only heirloom is violence.

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

What else has Garney done? I thought I didn't like him for some reason, but this was gorgeous.

Men of Wrath #1
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Ron Garney
Colors by Matt Milla

One of the great comics of the last decade or so is Scalped. Jason Aaron told a tale for the long run. It was amazing to watch unfold and was one of the best in the crime genre, ever. Then Marvel snatched him away and we got crazy stories like his Grindhouse run of Ghost Rider. As you may or may not know, I took a break from comics for a while. I don’t know what he did while I was gone, but Original Sin is the only thing I have read since I came back and it was underwhelming to say the least.

So... when I saw that he was doing an Icon book I was torn. I was excited cause this meant it would not be Marvel heroes, but his own thing. (I should also probably mention that I was intrigued by Southern Bastards but it sold out before I got to the shop that week.) I was also a little upset because my pull list was getting out of control and I’m a little pissed at Marvel (1. Brevroot is a jerk, 2. $4.99 is stupid and more of their books are/were costing that much.) Then Angus picked this for the group and I had an excuse. By the way, screw you Angus...

Cause this book was awesome. Everything I could have hoped for really. Ira Roth is a hit man who comes from a long line of violent men. Aaron opens the book recounting where all the violence began. From there we are introduced to Ira and his ruthless style of mercenary work. He is cold blooded, old and well, just generally awesome. He’s the guy we all thought Clint Eastwood would age into, instead of the get off my lawn meme we got. It’s not the most mindblowingly different crime book (until a killer twist is revealed at the end, that dear reader I will leave to you), but it is solidly written. It is intriguing and involves the reader in such a way that he is engrossed in the story to a point that when he gets to the end, he doesn’t realize he was near the end and that twist is more than enough to get him to want to come back.

Garney was another problem with the book. I don’t have a clue what it was I read by him, but I distinctly remember not liking him. I seem to remember sloppy lines and the such. Did he do fill in work on X-Factor or Cable? I can’t remember and wikipedia is not being helpful as the period I remember him from is not represented at all. Anyhow, I am either mistaken or he is taking his time here. His lines are sharp, his backgrounds look like a ruler was used but they still have style and life to them. Imagine if McNiven drew Old Man Logan with more character and you would pretty much be right where this book is in terms of look. It’s kind of the feel of the book overall, Old Man Logan as a real dude in the real world. Milla's phenomenal coloring work just draws it altogether.

This is a comic that is right up my alley and it fires on all cylinders. This is the Aaron that I love. I can’t wait till he focuses on this stuff and gets away from the for hire books cause capes are not his forte. Good thing Southern Bastards came out in trade this week to give me another fix of his work unhindered by editorial mandate and years of continuity.

Oh, snap! I just started reading Southern Bastards Vol 1 and in the foreword, Aaron pretty much says that the opening scene here is autobiographical.... cool. And fucked up.

This week's pick is....

Wytches #1

Image

Across the globe, century after century, men and women were burned, drowned, hanged, tortured, imprisoned, persecuted, and murdered for witchcraft. None of them were witches. They died protecting a terrible and hidden truth: witches, real witches, are out there. They are ancient, elusive, and deadly creatures that are rarely seen and even more rarely survived. This October, superstar creators SCOTT SNYDER (SEVERED, Batman) and JOCK (SNAPSHOT, Batman) unveil WYTCHES, and introduce you to a world of unimaginable horror in a special EXTRA-SIZED FIRST ISSUE with 30 pages of story and no ads for just $2.99

Well, the Raths are a lovely family aren't they. I will say that they do make for interesting subjects of a story though. From the first time we see Ira Rath, we know that this is a dangerous man full of darkness. As the issue progresses we see more of his complexity, but we are never allowed to forget the darkness. That darkness penetrates every scene we see him in. The final scene was amazing to read. When I read the final page I knew this series had me hooked.

I enjoyed this first issue. It made me want to see where this series goes from here.

Well, you can see how I would be confused as Canadians aren't supposed to be good at stuff, like picking fucking comic books.
