Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

Due to lack of consistent internet access, I'm gonna have to step down from making these threads for a while. Can anyone take over for a while?

First off I love Batroc as a villain, so I think he's a good choice for Sam first foe as the main character in this new title. Overall I'd say this issue gets things off to a good start. We know how Sam feels about taking up the mantle. We have an idea about how others feel about it. It was interesting to see how Batroc felt about it. We also know how Ian Rogers feels about and it looks like there should be some interesting tension there.

Then we get to the last page and the reveal concerning what villain is next. I won't reveal anything, but seeing that character brought a smile to my face.

In the end my interest was peaked and I was left wanting to see more. That's what you want see out of a successful first issue.

That there is one damn pretty looking book. Immonen is still at the top of his game.

And then I read I read it. I admit I was surprised on Page 1 (or 2, I never know if that recap page counts or not) that Remender knew about Sam's parents. I openly waited for a mention of Snap, but that never came.

What did come was a well drawn action/fight scene that lasted for darn near the whole book, but it was a drudge to read the words - the soliloquies and banter were just boring.

I suppose if this was the CapFalc I was first introduced to, instead of that Dick/Tyrant CapFalc in Remender's other book, I'd have been more open.

Even Batroc didn't thrill me the way he should.

And Ian - the one comic book gimmick I put in a very special corner of hell, is the accelerated growth of babies into kids/adults. So this Nomad likely isn't going to play with me.

I was pretty convinced mid-issue that this would be my last, but that page was interesting. Big Zemo fan! I like Cobra too. The rest however, especially Armadillo, aren't big on my list - so the next issue is a maybe.

All-New Captain America #1
Written by Rick Remender
Pencils by Stuart Immonen
Inks by Wade Von Grawbadger
Colors by Marte Gracia and Eduardo Navarro
Published by Marvel

I read this a couple of weeks ago when this thread was posted. It was the middle of the night and it really didn't make a lot of sense to me.

There were two problems with that initial reading. 1. I was tired as hell. 2. Even though I read the recap I retained none of it. I didn't know who Nomad was and there were problems with it anyhow, in that it doesn't really explain Steve's role in this issue. He seems to be like Kate's dad in Batwoman, but that is merely supposition.

Anyhow, had I written a review that night it probably would have read something like "nigh incomprehensible, but really pretty. Story - 1 Art - 10 Overall 5.5"

Good thing I gave it some time and read it again when I was a conscious human being. Cognizance is a beautiful thing. So is this book. Like wow, Immomen has been one of my favorite pencillers for quite a while. Problem is they love to put him on these big epic action books that, in my opinion, are not really paired well with his style. All-New X-Men was the first time I felt Marvel was using him correctly. (Well, there was Nextwave, but as much as I loved that book - the coloring was off; like the new Valiant books, sometimes modern coloring is the wrong match to pencils.) Here, the art team works as a whole to give a bright modern look that works with Immonen's pencils and it elevates his notable art to superior art.

What's more is most of the issue is a big Expendables type comic action sequence. There is a flying Captain America throwing his shield around an enemy compound. There are big bright red backdrops as villains are tossed to their presumable (but inevitably not real) death. There are caverns and aerial views and old people fishing on canoes. This is a summer action film, weird that it came out in fall.

The story is not near as good as the art, but it isn't bad. There are some noticeable differences in what Remender is doing here and the balls our whackiness of the Dimension Z storyline (which I am in the middle of, so some light spoilers were given here but nothing that is going to ruin my enjoyment of that story.) Remender is giving a more subtle back story to Sam than I am used to him doing. It seems that a lot of groundwork for a good character arc are being laid here. While I think his strengths are to the craziness of the previous story with Romita, Jr., he does a fine job here. The rest of the story is more mainstream action than one is used to from Remender as well. What's cool about that is that he has become a much better writer through choosing appropriate artists. One might think it was editorial. It would make sense, Romita and Immonen are artistic draws to a book - but Remender brought in Moore for Fraken-Castle. He might be very adept at choosing the artist that is right for the story. Whether this is an editorial pairing or just a team that grew organicly is a moot point. What is obvious is that Immonen and co are a better pairing for this story, while Romita was the right choice for the crazy stuff before.

This was a surprise. I expected to hate it, even so much that I probably let that influence that first late night and ill advised reading. Remender has done what only Brubaker has managed to do for me before, make me like Captain America. (Even when it is a dumb diversification manipulation.)

Solid review. Not enough to entice me to read the book, but solid.
