Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

I was skeptical when Soule took over from Snyder on Swamp Thing. He definitely changed the tone of the book - basically a horror comic under Snyder - but looking back over this entire run as it finishes here with #40, he did a wonderful job of fleshing out the Swamp Thing mythos, adding a lot of characters and places that I think will stick with Swamp Thing and give future writers a lot of areas to build on for whenever the title is relaunched.

Issue #40 was the finale to not only the title, but the long-running plot re: the green and the former avatars. I think Soule maybe tried to get a little clever with the Story Teller (I don't recall if they were ever actually named?) spin, but all the same this felt like a satisfying conclusion to the story.

The art from Saiz and Chung was outstanding as per usual, with some very impressive battle scenes re: the avatars of the green and the machines. There was a strange mistake in a panel with the blue former avatar and current Swamp Thing where the speech boxes came from the wrong heads though. Not a biggie.

This one book I'll miss each month.

Nobody was ever going to top Alan Moore's Swamp Thing. Rick Veitch came close but then there was a drought for a couple decades. Then the New 52 started and Scott Snyder hit it out of the park immediately. When word came he was leaving I was convinced I'd be dropping the book. Due to advanced ordering I got the first couple Charles Soule issues. And I am so glad I did because Swamp Thing was the best Swamp Thing since Moore.

And after 23 issues plus two Annuals, Soule has finished his tenure on the title with the this weeks #40.

Swamp Thing #40

The Avatar War continues with the Rithm, Grey & Rot versus the Green & the Rots former Avatar. Swamp Thing has recruited all the former Green Avatars to his side in one last ditch battle for everything. It's a massive battle that sees losses on all sides, and just as things get their darkest, Swamp Thing finds himself in a new realm and meets the Avatar of Artists (like Angus, a name I picked for it). Here he learns that the saga will not end and sure enough, he finds himself back on Earth and after dispatching Lady Weed (the Rithm Avatar) he stands victorious. Swampy sets the new Rithm on it's own path and he himself ends up back in the Swamp with his (dwindled in numbers friends) as he reads a book. The End.

The Artist Avatar was a bit of surprise but it all made sense at the end by the book Swamp Thing was reading (100 years of Solitude - a book about making a world using one's own perception). It equates quite nicely with the finale to this series (which I can only ponder on where Soule would have gone next with the character if he hadn't gone exclusive elsewhere).

Soule may be gone but his Swamp Thing legacy is abundant - he will be missed.

And Saiz - since joining the creative team, he has infected every issue with vibrancy. I especially love the very last panel where Swamp Thing stares back at the reader. A perfect ending.

I loved this series. I loved it under Snyder's helm and I loved it even more with Soule as the writer. I was amazed at what Charles Soule was able to bring to this series and the Swamp Thing's mythos in general.

Now with this issue, that run is over. I really enjoyed what I read, but it was sad to come to the end. The end battle was so well done. It's epic nature was so clear for any reader to see.

I am so glad that I read this series. It's going to be one that stays with me and stands out in my memory for years.
