Anything released on the week of May 4th per Midtown Comics. Multiple reviews will count.

Digital copies can be found here.

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it at $3.99 or under.

Black Widow #3

Natasha is still being blackmailed by the Weeping Lion and still being pursued by Agent Elder. Her journey takes her back to Russia and to the ruins of the Red Room. There we get to see saw flashbacks to Natasha's time as a student there.

I didn't think that this issue was as strong as the first two. The problem is that, "Natasha returning to the Red Room and reliving memories," is a story point that has been used with this character lots of times before. I don't expect to read something badly written by Mark Waid, and this certainly wasn't the case as I did enjoy it. Having said that, Waid didn't add anything new to this story point that I haven't seen before. As a result I came away feeling like the plot had been advanced, but also with a strong, "been there, done that," feeling. That feeling took something away from my overall enjoyment.

Nova #7

Sam Alexander gets an emergency message from the clone of his father. With that, he goes back into space on a rescue mission.

There was a heart to this issue, (and to this series as a whole so far) that I really liked. The connections between Sam and his supporting cast are strong and well written. There were two very touching personal scenes between Sam and his sister and Sam and his mother that I really enjoyed. Once the story got to the rescue mission, the pace of writing was fast and fun. It was during that time that we also got another touching scene between Sam and the clone of Jesse Alexander.

Like the rest of this series so far, I'm not hopping up and down screaming about how wonderful this issue was. It was solid and well written though. I have no complaints about it or any other issues of this series.

Thunderbolts #1

In the wake of the Assault on Pleasant Hill crossover, Bucky Barnes has reformed the Thunderbolts. He leads them on a new mission to safeguard the Earth from extra-terrestrial dangers and from the dangers of SHIELD missions gone wrong. The team also serves as the guardians of Kobik, the powerful being in the form of a little girl that SHIELD used to create Pleasant Hill.

I'm a long time fan of this team and it's been a while since I last read a new issue of Thunderbolts -- I dropped the series when it became the team with Punisher, Red Hulk, Elektra, etc.. I have to say that it felt good to flip through and read the pages.

The characters were pretty much as I remember them. Any deviation from their characterization as I remember them wasn't anything beyond what I would expect from a new writer taking them on. I do like the addition of Bucky as the team's new leader. The new mission they're on seems like it will take the team in an interesting direction that should give us some fun stories.

The only problem overall was the characterization of Kobik. I know she isn't really human, but in the Assault on Pleasant Hill crossover she was portrayed as a fairly realistic child. Here writer Jim Zub seems to be having her act as more of a stereotypical wacky kid. I can't say that I'm a fan of this change. In the end, it's a minor quibble that didn't do enough to damage my overall love of the return of a series that I've really missed reading.

Vampirella #3 (2016)

Books like this make me wonder where my testosterone sympathy do suddenly came from. I can only conclude that it came from... Books like this!

From the get-go we face the immaturity of this series, and unfortunately I don't mean "jokes and games." The variant cover shows us NuVampi lunging at Classic Vampi in an obvious attack against the old uniform. I wish that was all this book did.
My testosterone sympathy kicks up immediately and stays in high gear throughout the book as we see only female stars while male characters are talked down to and down about. They are fodder, servants, and dogs of the female characters in a shameless display of feminism gone wrong. I could deal with the crappy uni and the "looks like she's 12" junk if the sexism wasn't so damn thick. It was truly emphasized when their car is attacked and the male driver is injured. Vampi kicks ass, admitting to her opponent that she cares more about the car (even with the friend being inhuman enough to be sturdy, he STILL got hurt... and she STILL cares more about the car).

Plotwise, this isn't much fun as the writer tries to be both fun and epic... failing on both fronts. We find a long back story for the big bad villain and people get kidnapped. Another issue with this story is the idiotic pace. One thing after another, and that tactic is NOT this writer's strong suit.

I'd say this waste of time gets 2 out of 10. Maybe 2.5........ no, just 2. I'm even questioning that.

Punisher #1

I really wanted to like this comic, but found it to be okay. The plot centers around a killer drug that's going to hit the streets. Only one thing stands between it and chaos - a guy with a gun. There's nothing bad about the writing....well...except some of the slang. It's typical action shit. The art is alright, but the story could've thrown it a bone. With the creative team on hand, this should've been better.
