Captain America #701

Image

The year is 2314, and the grandson of Steve Rogers lives in the utopian America of which his ancestor dreamed. The legacy of Captain America has been realized — but something sinister lies beneath the surface! Leonardo Romero (HAWKEYE) joins Mark Waid for this very special look into the tomorrow of Captain America!

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it at $3.99 or under.

In the future Captain America's descendant, Jackson Rogers, finds himself caught up in danger after he tries to get help for his sick son. This quest leads him to discover the dark secret beneath an America that seems perfect on the surface.

This issue was just alright. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't badly written. I can't say that the story grabbed me and made me want more. I've read this issue that started the story and that's where I'm going to stop.

Waid/samnee's string of filler arcs continues as they rehabilitate Steve from Secret Empire. I have faith in the team that brought us great runs on DD and Black Widow. As such I have to assume this is going to form part of an overall Rampart (the MAGAesque villains of the previous arcs) plotline, but as Steve only appears in statue/archive form it's not exactly clear how from this issue alone. It's a fun new alt future to play with but beyond some well executed world building there's just not much here. Hopefully it will read better as a complete arc.

This run is setting itself up as a well regarded palatte cleanser between the main courses of Spencer and Coates. It's not a steak or a great dessert but rather a high end sorbet. 6.5/10

I reread and realised samnees not on this issue. Romero does a good job of apeing his art style for the future sections, so I didn't realise!

I opened the book and immediately fell in love with this issue - but then the Adam Hughes pages stopped (and also ended Cap being in his own book).

The future world was a bit of a bore. If anything I'd rather have seen it from the Kree point of view.

Or maybe there's just been one to many Super Soldier Serum stories and I'm burned out.

I'm not thrilled with the story but I'm pre-ordered so I guess I'm in for a while.

Story - 4
Art - Hughes - 8
Art - the rest - 6
X-factor - 0

Overall 4.5

After thinking about it for awhile, I think I'd like to drop my rating down to a 5 out of 10.
