Bubba Ho-Tep and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers #1

Image

From the mind of creator Joe R. Lansdale comes a prequel to the cult-classic film! President Nixon has discovered an alien threat, and he knows there's only one man he can reach out to for help: Elvis Presley. But will Elvis be enough to defeat a horde of Cosmic Blood-Suckers?

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it at $3.99 or under.

The concept of Elvis Presley secretly being a monster hunter in the 70s is an amusing idea. I'd say that the people behind this series took that amusing idea and did something fun with it.

I like the main character and I think Joshua Jabcuga does a good job of making the reader understand this version of Elvis. He's not at ease with the life he finds himself in. It seems like he'd much rather drop the monster hunting stuff and just go back to being en entertainer. It also seems like he feels like he has no choice but to continue down the path he is on. It all makes him seem a little tragic.

If there was one problem I had with this issue it was that the actual threat Elvis and his allies are going to have to deal with wasn't very well defined by the final page. I have some idea of what it is, but it still seems somewhat nebulous. I'd say that that fact takes something away from the overall feeling I have in the wake of reading this.

I was really looking forward to this. A new Bubba story from Joe Lansdale? I'm in. So I was really disappointed that the listings lied and Lansdale's only involvement seemed to be that it was based on bubba hotep. I not sure if that soured me or not because I came away from the comic with a distinct meh.

The art was serviceable but forgettable. The story went nowhere beyond explaining the rough premise. I like the twist that the colonel was blackmailing "stars" to work for him as monster hunters enough that I might be back for issue 2. All in all though for such a mad concept based on such a fantastic film this just felt somehow joyless..

I haven't had the chance to see the film yet, so that may be one of the reason why I liked this issue more than you did.
