You know those plastic Black Lantern rings that were so kewl that DC is now doing them for every color? I think Vertigo needs to do a similar promotion for Sweet Tooth. How badass would it be to go to your comic shop today and get plastic antlers with this issue? I'd totally wear mine all day.

Sweet Tooth #1
as selected by House of J[/center]
Story and Art by Jeff Lemire

From out of the deep woods and the mind of acclaimed indie cartoonist Jeff Lemire (THE NOBODY, The Essex County Trilogy) comes a new Vertigo monthly ongoing series like no other! After being raised in total isolation, Gus – a boy born with deer-like antlers – is left to survive in an American landscape devastated a decade earlier by an inexplicable pandemic. Even more remarkable is that Gus is part of a rare new breed of human/animal hybrid children who have emerged in its wake, all apparently immune to the infection.

Enter Jepperd, a violent, hulking drifter who soon takes in Gus and promises to lead him to "The Preserve," a fabled safe-haven for hybrid children. Along the way they'll have to contend with science militias, deadly scavengers, rival bounty hunters, and hybrid worshipping cultists as they fight to make it to safety and solve the mysteries of this deadly new frontier.

This bizarre and haunting new series is boldly written and illustrated by Eisner-nominated creator Jeff Lemire and elegantly colored by fellow Eisner nominee Jose Villarubia. A little boy with antlers, a big man with guns, a world without hope – SWEET TOOTH #1 ships in September for only $1.00!

If you would like to join the group it's easy. Just post a review and I'll add you to the member's list. As long as you stay active, eventually it will be your turn to make a pick.

With $4 comics becoming the norm, the economy being what it is and the growing popularity of mail order services the Review Group recognizes that it's becoming harder and harder to commit to participating each and every week. As long as you can post one review per calendar month you will stay in the member's list. It doesn't matter if you post your review the week of it's release or if you post it later. Going forward, there is no such thing as a "late" review.

The only request I make with the new format is that if you don't plan on posting a review or if you're going to be posting late is that you drop a note in the thread so that I can keep track of who is active and who isn't. The Spreadshee of Doom is thorough, but it can't read your mind.

Image
Comics are to be scored on a scale from 1-10. 1 being suck, 10 being a damn good comic. Beyond that, there's no right or wrong.

Image
If it's your week, you must announce your selection by 5pm EST the day Diamond releases it's shipping list. If you do not announce your pick at that time, I will add a poll to the thread that will remain open until 12pm EST so that the group can make the selection for that week. (If you're seriously MIA, I'll probably put the poll up sooner) To ensure that you know it's your week, I will PM you when Midtown's list goes live on Thursdays.

Has anyone read Lemire's other stuff? I have not.

(That'll draw Lee out, he'll be eager to point out he's read everything.)

I've been wanting to pick up that Complete Essex County book, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. If I like Sweet Tooth I'll probably order it this month.

Not yet, but I will, one of my friends loves Essex County, and his interview on Wordballoon was very good.

My review for FF is up btw.

I thought The Nobody looked good, maybe after some of the big payments I'm waiting for clear I can buy it if ST is a good read.

I haven't really found any of the newer Vertigo titles compelling enough to pick up monthly.

Now that Young Liars is over, I'm only reading Vertigo in trades.

That appears to have bitten me in the ass recently though as it doesn't look like they're ever going to put out the last Army@Love mini in trade form.

Maybe in trade, I didn't read #2 or beyond. It was good, but it didn't say "You must buy me monthly" to me. With Wednesday comics and the review books weekly, a book really has to connect with me at this point to buy monthly. I didn't read any Harry Potter, so maybe that's why it didn't matter as much to me.

Defo get the first trade, it's expanded to be about more than Harry Potter now, it's about all fiction.

I'm getting a ton of Vertigo these days, Hellblazer, House Of Mystery, Unwritten, DMZ, Nortlanders and Scalped in trade.

That sucks. If Sweet Tooth is really good, I would consider picking it up floppily.

I have a lot of work to do getting getting for a show on Labor day, but I just feel like sitting around reading comics later, it's going to be hard to stay motivated after I pick 'em up at noon.

That sounds good, if I see cheapos or the first trade later.

I've been avoiding spoilers.

Anyone read Air? I had a strong negative reaction to #1.

I read the first trade and I think I liked it. If you didn't like the first issue, I wouldn't bother with the rest of it.
