Review:

Oh look! More Jubilee and X-23 shenanigans in X-23 #12! With Laura's trigger scent sending even ordinary citizens into a bloodthirsty rage, it's up to Wolverine, Gambit, Jubilee and X-23 to save the day!

I admit it, seeing these four frolick and raise hell in Paris gives me this giddy feeling inside. It's just so shoujo manga-ish I could have sworn there was a mangaka involved. But it's just Marjorie Liu writing to her strengths, and it's a fun read because of it. One scene in particular, where Jubilee schools stone-cold Laura about living life to the fullest, was one of the sweetest and most inspring character moments I've read this year. These two are definitely shaping up to be my equivalent of Blue and Gold! And hey, Liu even throws a bone for all those slash shippers out there with some Wolvie and Gambit scenes that could be altogether innocent or hopelessly misconstrued.

Sana Takeda on art is not her usual best, though. There are some parts of the book that are rushed and uneven; it's like the stress of an ongoing gig is getting to her. But when she puts her mind to it, Takeda is capable of amazing imagery, like a splash page of our four heroes surrounded by homicidal civilians with red glowing eyes. The brightness of our heroes in the middle of the page being swallowed up by the ocean of darkness and evil (filled with unsettling red eyes no less!) surrounding them is such a cool and cinematic panel that sells the situation and the drama of the moment convincingly.

It's the end of another arc courtesy of Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, and solicits tell of Laura getting involved with the main Marvel universe again next issue. Those kinds of crossovers usually suck for books like these, but at least we have memories of a book that's fun to read and look at.

Jubilee and X on the Eiffel tower was a cool moment, but I thought everything else about this issue kinda sucked. :smt102

I liked this arc. It was nice and sweet something the book needed after the darkness Liu had Gambit and Laura wad around with Sinister and Dakken.
