DC Scrapes Bottom of Barrel, Taps Brian Keene for Origin of Hordak Comic

Its probably not a good idea for the outhouse to pick on its only professional friend (in any industry - our readers don't have jobs), but really: He-Man?

The internet was rocked with mild interest this morning when Comicvine published an announcement from DC Comics about a brand new entry in the Masters of the Universe origins series: The Origin of Hordak. Novelist and comic book creator Brian Keene, whose judgment is questionable as he is an admitted reader of The Outhouse, will join Keith Giffen on writing duties, with Scott Koblish handling art chores. This is not the first time Keene and Giffen have collaborated. Giffen illustrated a pre-Nu52 Doom Patrol story by Keene in 2011, a black mark on Giffen's otherwise stellar resume. In a rare example of DC learning from past mistakes, the company has made sure Keene is not left to write this one on his own.

The comic, due out on May 29, expands on DC's recently launched Masters of the Universe line by telling what Comicvine claims is "the full story of Hordak," which must be extremely comprehensive, since it fills up an entire comic book. The longevity of this latest Masters of the Universe reboot is stil up in the air, but He-Man has struggled to regain his former popularity since an abysmal Dolph Lundgren movie destroyed the once mighty franchise in 1987, and even back then, Hordak was never the most well-known of He-Man's colorful foes. Since it's therefore doubtful this comic meets any kind of actual fan demand, The Outhouse has to assume that the sole purpose of producing it is to meet some kind of "special" hiring quota by employing Keene.

Despite popular perception, however, Hordak is actually a far more interesting character than the more widely appreciated Skeletor. While Hordak was known primarily as a She-Ra villain in the cartoon universe, he has often battled both He-Man and Skeletor in cartoons and comics. In fact, unlike Skeletor, who famously wimped out and saved children in the He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special, Hordak has never sold out, remaining forever true to his evil roots.

With that in mind, this book might turn out to be pretty great after all. We're tired of sympathetic villains with motivations that the reader can identify with. Sometimes, we just want to read about a one-dimensional Kang ripoff that has never successfully defeated He-Man, an effeminate pretty boy, who, despite being the prince of the entire planet of Eternia, has never been married and instead chooses to spend all of his time in the companionship of his giant cat, Cringer. Meow!

If this is that book, then we're all in here at The Outhouse. And if it manages to reinvigorate the He-Man franchise, all the better. We've had a script kicking around since shortly after we hit puberty that tells a heartwarming story of a time that Evil-Lyn and Teela were trapped in a cave for 3 weeks, alone, cold, confused... Mmmm.

Listen, uh, we gotta go. We just remembered we need to take a very cold shower. Look for Masters of the Universe: The Origin of Hordak in stores on May 29!
