SDCC 2011: A Look Behind the New 52

Postby LOLtron » Fri Jul 22, 2011 2:44 pm

SDCC 2011: A Look Behind the New 52Want to know the secret origin of the DCnU?  Click to find out.

Dan Didio dramatically revealed the origins of DC's controversial and traumatic decision to relaunch the universe in DC's The New 52: Friday panel.

According to the co-publisher, the origin of the relaunch began last October when discussing how best to draw the DC Comics line out of a self-admitted stagnation.  Twenty-three DC employed writers were called in for a retreat to discuss the DC Universe.   The writers discussed the loss of epicness and excitement in the DCU and how the universe had resorted to a bunch of talking heads.  It was commonly agreed that some sort of change had to occur.

Also discussed was the Super-marriage, which was a topic of hot debate.  Many writers agreed that the Super-marriage had caused the Superman books to become complacent.  Eddie Berganza stated that it was time to take some things away from Superman, starting with his underwear and his wife.  [Outhousers' Note: Judging from the preview pages with DCnU lothario Jonathan Carroll, DC's also decided to take away Superman's dignity as well.]

As sales figures dipped towards the end of the year, DiDio decided that something had to be done.  That something was to reboot the line.  While DiDio initially planned to not renumber Action Comics or Detective Comics, DiDio's mysterious corporate overlords told him that no one would take him seriously if a book was spared.  Thus WB killed the large numbers that we fans have come to expect on the corner of the two oldest DC titles.

Also shared was that Karen Starr and Mr. Terrific could very well be the last remnants of the JSA, that Stephanie Brown will be part of Batman's world (probably as Spoiler as DiDio was a big fan of the character), and that they're looking for an 82.75% success rate for non-cancellations in their books (43 out of the initial 52).

Isn't blaming the marriage for the decline of the Superman books extremely disingenuous? It isn't like the 'World of New Krypton' or 'Grounded' sagas would've suddenly become Eisner Award winners because Superman and Lois were seeing other people.

Maybe DC (and Marvel, as well) need to stop looking for easy scapegoats and hold themselves accountable for their creatively bankrupt state, but what the hell do I know?

I think Eddie Berganza was one of the things that needed to be taken away from Superman, not Lois, or his shorts.

Superman didn't need things taken away, he needed things to be added. Like a spine. Or a lick of sense.

>Fan asked about Wally West. DiDio said they wanted to focus on Barry Allen, and then in the course of his answer joked that being Robin was more of an "internship" since there have been four in five years.

Dick Grayson
Jason Todd
Tim Drake
Stephanie Brown
Damian Wayne

What's that about Didio being a Steph fan again? :P

I'd guess that War Games and her time and alleged death of Robin has been removed.

Tell that to the shitstorm this and the JSA stuff will erupt because of Dan's comments. He is SOOO not helping his cause. :P Yes, I hated War Games but loved the brief time Steph was Robin. To negate that would negate her time as Batgirl too.

So we learned a lesson here in this panel: DC doesn't care about making sense of their histories or continuity. They only care about the money and attracting non-existent "new readers." I know DC is a company and should care about the money, but this is pathetic and why I'm sticking to my guns ignoring this shit come September.
