SPACE special InDIY Hunter 5 Ohh! Interview with Max Ink!Max Ink! graces the InDiY 5 Ohh! with his signature answers for our ongoing SPACE coverage! Can you Dig it?!

Max Ink has been at it for decades, witness as he walks us through his time at the first SPACE and other experiences as an Independent Creator.

IH: Max, you're attending SPACE this year what can people expect to see when they walk, stop, stutter, and gasp by your table?

MI: I've been at every SPACE since it began in 2000 and I've been doing the comic book convention thing since the late 80's. They'll see someone who knows how to be friendly and professional but not pushy. (I can't stand pushy people.) My first Blink graphic novel, So Far, came out last year and received numerous rave reviews (and came in second place for this year's SPACE Prize). So, I'll have plenty of copies of that. Then there's the first chapter of my second Blink GN, So It Goes. The reviews are beginning to trickle in and it's all good thus far. Also, if I see a person passing by my table and have the slightest inclination that they might enjoy reading my comic, I will hand them a free Blink mini comic. So strings attached. Because free mini comics are awesome.

IH: For new people, tell them what Max Ink is about?

MI: Max Ink is all about writing and drawing honest stories featuring fictional people (Blink and her friends, Sam and Hank) living their lives in the Heart of Ohio-- Columbus. Blink is sincere, sublime and meaningful. My comic has been compared to the works of Alex Robinson, Terry Moore, Adrian Tomine, Alison Bechdel, Dave Sim and Dan Clowes. Max Ink also all about humility.

IH: If you could give us a peek into your process how do you approach your comic making? What are you go to methods or tools?

MI: I'm actually putting the final touches on a book which goes into great detail about that: Behind The Sketchbook: The Making of "Wonka Wonka Kochalka." It's 40 pages long and filled tons of sketches and notes about how I went about making this "Wonka" comic (which is the first chapter of the new Blink graphic novel). Here's the expurgated version: think of something (preferably original), write it down (in a notebook), draw it (on paper with a pencil, pen & ink), scan it (into the computer), clean it (using Photoshop), copy it (at a local place or at a big hoo-ha printer), sell it (to anyone and everyone).

IH: What's a project you've been dreaming about doing?

MI: I'm very happy with what I've got going on right now. But, someday, I'd like to write a space fantasy story and hire some other artist (who's more skilled and talented than I) to illustrate it.

IH: What's on the horizon for you, anything upcoming?

MI: The So It Goes graphic novel will take me about four or five years to write and draw. So Be It is the next book after that. It's basically plotted out and will take another five years to write and draw. I also have three more Blink books figured out after that. I'm pretty well set for the next few decades.

IH: Lastly where can people find Max Ink on the internets?

MI: www.maxinkcomix.com

Max is very talented, his art style reminds me of classic newspaper cartoon strips.

You're right, there's a nice quality to it. The storytelling is clear too.
