Stories That End Where the Events Never Happened

Postby Stephen Day » Mon Feb 11, 2013 10:24 pm

My thoughts on this come from my reading of the current Animal Man/Swamp Thing crossover. As things got underway I quickly realized that the only way that this story could end was with time travel that made sure that all of the events that I was about to read would never actually take place.

I was right as the end of Swamp Thing #17 Arcane went back in time and Animal Man and Swamp Thing followed him.

First off, I do have to say that I have enjoyed Rotworld so far and that overall it's been alright. Having said that, is anyone else a little tired of reading, watching or hearing stories with this sort of ending? Yeah it can be done right, but too often, personally speaking, I get the feeling in the middle of the story that nothing I'm seeing, reading or hearing matters. That's not a feeling that enhances the experience.

Age of Apocalypse is an example of that sort of story done right. I can't comment on the other two as I've never read them.

I'd say that the events of It's a Wonderful Life Matter do matter. I'm more talking about stories where everything get erased with virtually no impact. It can't be said that that is the case with the what if portions of It's a Wonderful Life.

The worst example I can think of was the 2-part "Year of Hell" in Star Trek" Voyager.

That one really pissed me off.

I just have this memory. Of someone violently running over Patrick Duffy then suddenly he's in the shower alive and well. I don't know why. It's the only thing I ever remember watching of the show when I was a kid. Hell my parents made me watch A-Team, Falcon Crest, and Magnum P.I. Hell if I remember any of the episodes now :P

Yeah, I'm not a fan of that two parter either. I remember getting to the end of the second episode and thinking, "well, what the hell was the point in that."

Whoa, whoa, whoa, let me get this straight -- are you telling me that you didn't care who shot JR?

Not that I cared either, but I just want to be sure of just what it is you're saying here.
